In early days pursuing The Thoroughbred interests, there went forum outcries to the Phalaris disease. https://www.pedigreequery.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11081, phalaris lines spell speed at the expense of soundness

Obviously, Phalaris male line made hay…(Nearco)

From insight the remarkable threshold, the male line at grand-father Cyllene is unbelievably staggering. Getting my hands to 1960 New Zealand stallion registries, the spell-binding breeding significance of Cyllene descendants was and is still not to be missed. His lines are seriously present.

Cyllene – Captivation sire of Kircubbin sire of Chateau Bouscaut sire of *The Phoenix & Chanteur

Cyllene sire of Cylgad, sire of Kassala, sire of Pappageno II

Cyllene sire of Bridge of Earn, sire of Bridgemount sire of Foxbridge

Cyllene sire of Polymelus

Cyllene sire of Cicero, sire of Friar Marcus

Cyllene sire of Lemberg

Cyllene sire of Helicon

Cyllene sire of Cellini

Cyllene sire of Minoru, sire of daughter Serenissima dam of SELENE

Phalaris – Pharos sire of Firdaussi

Fairway, sire of Fair Trial: his full brother Pharos sire of Nearco

The Phoenix, best son of Chateau Bouscaut won the Irish 2,000 Guineas and Derby

By references (three stallion registers) what was apparent, then the major influences, to line @Teddy, the strain @ Carbine descendants (Spearmint) and with Hyperion from his dam @Selene (further to her sire-son influences Sickle, Pharamond, Hunter’s Moon )to another @ Bay Ronald’s line through son Dark Ronald & his son Gainsborough.

At tail-male Cyllene to a Teddy cross was ‘pre-present’ to Argentina genetic-giant British Empire (GB) 1937. He was bred by Lord Glanely and sent to Argentina 1940. He won four races as a 2 year old. The Teddy daughter Rose of England won the Oaks. His son Equinox (ARG) cross broodmare sire is Hunter’s Moon (Selene), further distaff influence Carbine (Clemence) +2×3 Hampton by Lord Clifden ex The Slave, Martha Lynn.

The Teddy male-line with Spearmint cross (daughter Plucky Leige) produced Bull Dog (FR) 1927 & Sir Gallahad (FR). Half-Brother Admiral Drake (FR) by Craig an Eran (GB) has broodmare sire Cyllene.

The ‘link’ between Teddy and Cyllene is Bend Or/Tadcaster back to distaff Clemence/Martha Lynn family assigned family 2-h. The Bay Ronald link and tail-line to these superior individuals is back to The Slave distaff of Martha Lynn. (n.b. whilst Martha Lynn families has L4 haplotype, I suspect the predecessor was also part G Haplotype – a formative cross sub-variant type to many Horse breeds.

An Australian Hall of Fame chestnut Heroic was the leading sire in Australian 7 times in succession. Heroic’s racing record speaks for itself – 1st: AJC Champagne S., AJC Derby, VATC Caulfield Guineas, VATC Caulfield S., MVRC W.S. Cox Plate, VRC Newmarket H., WmtnRC Underwood S., AJC Breeders’ Plate, VRC Maribyrnong Plate, Tatt’s NSW Chelmsford S., VRC Ascot Vale (2yo) S., AJC Autumn S., VATC Memsie S. (x2), AJC Cumberland S., MVRC William Reid S., VATC St. George S., VRC King’s Plate, WmtnRC C.F. Orr S.

Remarkably Heroic has 3Sx3 Cyllene, 3x Hampton by Lord Clifden from The Slave/Martha distaff + 4x Bend Or/Tadcaster as prior mentioned. https://www.pedigreequery.com/heroic

TBL favourite character Court Martial (Fair Trial) by @Winkiepop distaff many a time profiles to Australian bred – do note Court Martial has >> 5×5 Cyllene + 5×5 Bay Ronald.

5×5 Cyllene + 5×5 Bay Ronald. Broodmare sire of Lyphard!

Re-evaluation upon Cyllene – Bay Ronald and affinities Teddy & Selene goes central. Our antipodean great sire Sir Tristram (Sir Ivor) tail-male Polymelus/Cyllene – 2x Princequillo >Minoru/Cyllene + Bayardo/Bay Ronald + Selene distaff. Sir Tristram’s best son Zabeel from Lady Giselle 2x Hyperion/Selene + 3×4 Sunny Boy > Teddy, 3x Bay Ronald + distaff Friar Marcus/Cicero/Cyllene.

What’s the Nutshell?

Since research here has of late, explores G haplotype in connection of formatting superior Types it is pretty much conclusive what the superior, bred Elite direction is. However, hooking into G Haplotype prepare to be befuddled at Ped. Tables, with literature side-stepping the greater picture; a hybrid-Thoroughbred framework as alone Northern European British bloodstock recorded goes clearly not that simple.

https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Haplogroup-tree-of-HVR-1-sequences-from-the-studied-horses-Mutations-were-shown-on-the_fig2_3255114

What we need to realize and exploit where probability arises….its pretty obvious by now why, to the Galileo potency. There are more…

As much taken by this sire Isfahan (Ger) https://www.ohlerweiherhof.de/deckhengste/deckhengst_isfahan.php the key-markers are reasonably evident. Leading Juvenile sire in England, among the leading Broodmare Sires in N.A. — Sire of 83+ SW and 10 Champions – headlines 4×4 Sharpen Up, himself of the Sickle/Selene tail-male 5×3 Hyperion/Selene + Carbine (fam.2-h) thru Felstead & Bois Roussel, sire Atan distaff 3rd dam by Fairway, Fair Play through Discovery, Rocchetta’s 4th dam by Pharos. The ‘band’ of ‘G’ genetic Players are all to see viz. Bay Ronald/Dark Ronald ie Birkhahn (Ger), Sickle (particularly Sea Bird),

In an era when we rarely concern ourselves with names beyond the fifth generation, we hardly ever encounter Cyllene. He is further back in pedigrees, and it is no exaggeration to state in all pedigrees. His Derby winners played their part, but the star turn was unquestionably Polymelus, five times champion at stud and sire of Phalaris, the most influential of all 20th century stallions. by Tony Morris https://www.thoroughbredracing.com/articles/3714/tony-morriss-100-shapers-breed-sire-who-became-staple-ingredient/

Cyllene a symmetrical chestnut colt, inherited a wonderful temperament. Cyllene sired four English Derby winners in 1909 and 1910 and also led the Sires List in Argentina. He was a horse that could accelerate more than once during a race and he was able to pass this gift to many of his progeny, especially to his tall son Polymelus. Ken McLean – Quest for a Winner

Cyllene never stops… to be one of the most penetrative potent influences ever and to end this dissertation (its never completed) the most important dam-line to sires in making is designated Reine-de-Course mare Striking (family 1-x). https://www.pedigreequery.com/striking To be Noted, Fair Play – Spearmint – Teddy – Cyllene

Carbine, El Roca, Felstead, Musket

Its been a few years since reviewing New Zealand sire pedigree El Roca.

His 3yo filly Krementz (by El Roca) from dam Cashenti ex-Conatus (Danehill), pedigree.

Firstly, let’s never forget the history built to the Australian and New Zealand breeding scene. So many exceptional influences like Pipe of Peace tail-male Hurry On, Wilkes & Star Kingdom, & earlier the Australasian sire of sires, *Musket.

Musket put the fledging New Zealand thoroughbred industry on the map in one stroke. Beforehand Musket was a virtual unknown. He had been bought in England in the late 1870’s, shipped to New Zealand for a career as a sire of carriage horses. In his first season he served only three stud book mares. His son Martini-Henry won the Victoria Derby and the Melbourne in his first two starts. Australians began scrambling for progeny of Musket. Musket sired a stream of top class horses, that climaxed less than a month before his death in 1885 by the birth of his champion son Carbine, a magnificent bay who galloped the Australian turf like a giant.         (November Gold – Max Lambert)

Old Genetic power bring forth… Krementz is a 1400m winner. 4 starts – 2 metro win, 1 – 2nd place. Note her conformation below.

Haplotype L4 for stamina, speed and weight. It is evident a L4 Haplotype geno complements an extraordinary phenotype ability. With few family exceptions, L4 belongs to the Family 2 but one special ancestress dam calls it big, Martha Lynn, f.f. 2-h and holds to the distaff family of Carbine.

Carbine shot through the field like a thunderbolt.    1890 Melbourne Cup report.

Further to this L 4 Haplotype (female family 2-r) has *Miss Kate’s daughter Catherine Wheel, a grand-daughter of *Musket. More so, f.f.2-r famed to Phar Lap (5×5 Musket) & a distaff, 3xAustralian Horse of the Year Sunline.

Krementz workings @ Pedigree 👇👇👇

her 5th dam Singalong (f.f.2-r) has MUSKET – 👉👉5S x 6D x 6D (f.f.3-h)
(female family 2r distaff @ Blazing Saddles (AUS) a son of **Todman, the 3rd dam sire Krementz

*Miss Kate (f.f.2-r) was dam of Perkin Warbeck (NZ) and he appears to the sire El Roca @ 9th dam.

3×3 Danehill @ 9 strains Carbine, noting Danzig’s 3rd dam ***Felstead is a tail-male Carbine/Musket. Noting...Danehill’s distaff hails from Mother Goose (Chicle) by Spearmint by Carbine (+ noted to Northern Dancer & Halo).

-***Felstead notes to El Roca via Millionaire’s 4th dam & as is, Bletchingly 3rd dam by Felstead.

Felstead was the 1928 Derby winner and his daughter Rockfel was a 1938 Oaks winner. Her breeding fame & son Rockefella (Hyperion) produced Rafha (4×4 Rockefella) dam of Invincible Spirit (IRE). Rockefella is 2nd dam grand-sire to Sunline (commented above)

Krementz 5th dam by Star Kingdom’s son Shifnal (dam Oceana) at 6 strains Star Kingdom, additionally > 6sx5D **Todman from same dam Oceana.

  Oceana is f.f. 1-u and takes co-affinity to Selene, f.f. 6-e aka 15x Hyperion and 3x Big Game @ L3a1b Haplotype. (n.b. bloodlines.net indicates studbook errors)

The Star Kingdom influence through sons, grand-sons and daughter descendants was Australasian breed-shaper. Star Kingdom goes enormous and it is Todman, Biscay son Bletchingly, Marscay, Zephyr Bay marks superior classic quality. (Check blog Ripcord (AUS) – run me like a racehorse & dam-side G1 winner – RIFF ROCKET by American Pharoah

8dx7d Pipe of Peace (the #GA male-line, tail-male Hurry On). Pipe of Peace hails f.f. 22-d, 3rd dam Infra Red, has distaff-line same Mill Reef, the sire of Millionaire and sire of El Roca 2nd dam Mill Rani. The family 22-d has L3a1a Hapotype (n.b. Mill Rani’s daughter Millrich is dam of Redzel – 2017/2018 Everest winner and dam of sire Danerich).

  • 8x7x7 Relic (via, Bletchingly, Soviet Star, Rory’s Jester, the #GA male line, US bred strains to Man O’War – essential prototype. It is the superior, classic blue-print explosion ancestral and nucleus male lines #GA, as is #BT upon Rubiton.

Krementz’s 8th dam by Pherozshah – the half-brother to Mahmoud f.f. 9-c, empress Mumtaz Mahal ). The Aga Khan bred sire Pherozshah came to New Zealand in 1944.

  • Clock the Mahmoud daughters thru Northern Dancer, Danehill, His Majesty, 2nd dam sire Roan Rocket with Pherozshah + Venture (Relic) b/m sire of Soviet Star
  • Mumtaz Mahal pouring through e.g. Nasrullah, Abernant, Prince Taj, Lucky Bag, Tudor Minstrel, Fair Trial, Royal Charger, Badruddin where her far-reaching genetics are pure Powerhouse. And cleverly, diverse ‘Mutiple’ across i.e. subtle female affinities factoring
  • the family number 9-c has L1a Haplotype

And so, as the Musket/Carbine/Spearmint era went by – their breeding further exploded that goes beyond anything else: the female contributor and influential Plucky Liege where sired by Spearmint cannot ever go genetically annulled. She is the dam of Sir Gallahad, full brother Bull Dog, half-brothers Admiral Drake and Bois Roussel.

@ Krementz pedigree, Plucky Liege influences are seen to Buckpasser, Admirals Voyage, Nijinsky, Royal Academy, Only for Life/Millionaire/El Roca, Habitat, Blazing Saddles (AUS)

(n.b. Plucky Leige is extremely influential to numerous US Derby winners like White Abarrio – to catch, White Abarrio

Indeed further classic factors course to Krementz with Wilkes (7d x 6d). Wilkes was a three times champion Australian sire and notably four times champion sire of 2 yr olds. Also of Krementz pedigree, Soviet Star (USA) – his bloodlines may be better remembered by the name of New Zealand bred Starcraft – Australian 3yo champion and sire of Star Witness.

waste not genetics – they can come hot

Carbine might never have left Australia but for a bank crash which forced Wallace, a wealthy grazier and racehorse owner and breeder, to sell up. Purchased by the Duke of Portland, Carbine was shipped to England to the Duke’s Welbeck Abbey Stud, where he stood alongside St Simon. Several thousand people flocked to the dockside in Melbourne to say farewell when Carbine was loaded on to the steamer for England.  (November Gold – Max Lambert)

🐴 Musket daughter Ante Diem was sent to Argentina in 1884.

The ANTE DIEM family has accounted for at least 19 Argentine Classic winners, among them 1931 Triple Crown winner MINERAL, as well as many other winners of top races in both Argentina and Brazil. Ante Diem include genetic giant sire, Penny Post (Embrujo).

In the realm of turf legends, the wondrous Carbine won the 1890 Melbourne Cup carrying 66 kgs (the record still holds) 43 starts for 33 wins.

As a young colt Carbine was described as abnormally lazy and not flustered by the breaking in process. He seemed to lack ambition and had no class in the first two starts of his career.

Later representing Antipodean heritage, encore the iconic Phar Lap — 51 starts 37 wins. In the 1931 Melbourne Cup he carried a staggering 68 kgs (10stone 10lbs).

*To win the 1931 Melbourne Cup, Phar Lap had to carry his massive frame plus another 11.5% of his body weight. Can you imagine waking up one day and having an extra 11.5% more weight (credit ref. by Zeb Armstong)

Phar Lap had a marvellous temperament – a better temperament than any horse I have ever seen.

If the colt by Night Raid, from Entreaty, has four sound legs and a head, and looks right, buy him for me up to 200 guineas.

– New Zealand Hall of Fame mare Desert Gold. 36 wins from 54 starts, won consecutive 19 races winning from 1000m to 2800m. Defeating colts, she carried around 65kgs (144lbs).

Desert Gold

During the 1940’s it was all about Kindergarten – the powerhouse freak raced 35 times for 25 wins. He won the 1942 Auckland Cup by 5 lengths at a top weight of 64.5 kgs (10stone 2lbs). His female family 2-r is from the ancestress Miss Kate.

It was 1942 Easter Handicap, the champion Kindergarten carried 10 stone, 3lbs and put up a phenomenal performance – Galloping Greats/J. Costello

And come again, the Miss Kate distaff (as is Phar Lap) through the unforgettable Sunline. She won 32 times from 48 starts – this charismatic mare that captivated with an unrivalled ‘will’ to dominate at distances from 1100m to 2040m.

Contemplating the enigma – it becomes evident that an unrivalled ‘root’ lies within mitochondrial DNA haplotype, one with an unparalleled characteristic through to a weight-carrying performance.

It is by uncovering the family 2 ancestral Chestnut Thornton, daughter Lusty Thornton her descendants et al, has a special significance.

What individual was Chestnut Thornton?

The family#2 mare is key, as is the Haplotype L4.

To appreciate family 2 phenotype is the forgotten hero, the Irish Eclipse Harkaway.

Harkaway had an awkward breeding legacy and it was left to his son King Tom from dam Pocahontas (f.f.3-n). In turn, King Tom the broodmare sire as Equinox of Pedigrees Byerley Turk (#BT) line, St Simon. Noting, the female family 1-P Pinprick is 5x5x5 King Tom (aka Hornbeam, Court Martial, Black Caviar, Australian sire All Too Hard.)

It appears Harkaway is to quietly confined to the history corridor – yet his enormous racing attributes are pheno/geno/haplotype which warrants fullest attention.

Historic Hoofs – Harkaway, a famous horse🐴

Harkaway by Economist from a Nabocklish dam (dam’s given name Fanny Dawson, was the daughter of Harkaway’s owner Thomas Ferguson ). The Nabocklish mare was the winner of many Queen’s Plates in Ireland.

Harkaway though stated as chestnut was earlier accounted by pale yellow sorrel. As an individual he was powerful yet coarse and angular-looking. It was when in action that Harkaway’s astounding powers were seen and with an apparent ease to himself as he galloped. His vast stride and great speed was truly amazing. His head light, bony and long, with ears fine and well set on. His neck was short, light, well-formed and muscular. He stood rather high on the leg – 16 hands and 2 inches. A horse of great power largely to his hindquarters which were very lengthy, particularly muscular and of great breadth; he galloped very wide behind, bringing his stifles up with such a force at top speed where they would touch the legs of his jockey.

Harkaway won 11 races in Ireland, 1838 The Goodwood from start to finish, then the fastest on record. He won 25 times from 38 starts.

All of Harkaway’s successes made the American breeders ever keen to cast over their eager eyes upon Harkaway. Tattersalls where commissioned to send him over to the New World, but only at a price. Harkaway’s owner Mr Ferguson responded ” The price of Harkaway is six thousand guineas and I hunt him twice and thrice times a week”

Vast numbers went to see him believing Harkaway was one of the “wonders of the world”

Late to the start of a race and by its starting rules, the Harkaway rival was given a quarter of a mile start. Ferguson called to the jockey ” Go after them; you can give him to the Hare Park and win”

Harkaway never won the St Leger only because he was never entered. He was too superior.

His extraordinary performances would have the public in an uproar.

Harkaway had Godolphin (41 strains) and Crofts Partner (30 strains) & Flying Childers (23 strains)

His produce and his kind were better received by only an astute eye. Some odd accounts placing the dam’s pedigree with ‘flaws’ and deemed not ideal physique. Peculiar, round, wide-sweeping motion was Harkaway – temper of a lamb, the propelling power of a steam-engine, & the eye of a gazelle.

Not worth a bowl of soup – Mr Watts

Yet another’s account…{I should like to be an owner to a few of them with that ‘flaw’ – that this animal could run at any distance, carry any weight}.

His progeny easily defeated all Ireland bred horses of their year; they were said moderate, yet a perfect wonder.

It was stated Harkaway’s were some of the speediest, stoutest, and longest runners as well as best weight-carriers been very narrow between the fore-arms and fore-legs, still they had a well-expanded chest.

This King of the Curragh, an Irish Eclipse overpowered every opponent that had come his way; distancing horses of first class rated in both England and Ireland. Yet Harkness died by unforgiving view possibly due to the colourful personality of his owner Tom Ferguson.

He earned his livelihood as a drudge being held but little of account.

Bailey

It was a limited breeding career for Harkaway however his genetic prowess proudly ‘lives’ and today, only belongs to the Elite.

🐴🐴Harkaway is found to Lombard‘s distaff the female family 1-d.

A Harkaway grand-daughter Lady Chester (her dam, Audrey) was exported to New South Wales, Australia. For electrifying performances…the breath-taking grey flash by name of Chautauqua (AUS) – f.f. 8-k distaff ascends from Harkaway. The distaff to a haplotype mass through NZ bred Cyre – 4x Harkaway.

Audrey/Lady Chester by Harkaway has also influenced the bloodlines of the Australasian family #C24 – Tails (6 G1 wins) and Man About Town (Winter Cup winner) both by Dalray.

And to the remarkable Kiwi #2-b distaff – a 23 horse field in the 1983 Melbourne Cup and Kiwi came from last to first to win by 1 1/4. (replay)

Family #2 – branches majority are assigned to haplotype L 4: to note other #2 branches are assigned differing haplotypes 2-a, 2-c, 2-d, 2-f.

Carbine, haplotype L4 review our TBL article Martha Lynn #2h,

– haplotype L4 are (as presented above) Desert Gold (NZ) distaff #2-g. (review #2-g Challenger)

🐎✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨🐎

By some heavenly order… Carbine once raced against descendants of Harkaway daughters. 1888 Australian Derby winner & Australian St Leger Melos as his Australian dam was 4th generation daughter by Harkaway. 1889 Victoria Derby, VATC Caulfield Stakes & 1890 VRC St.Leger, AJC St.Leger, VRC Australian Cup winner was Dreadnought by Chester from dam Lady Chester the daughter Austrey by Harkaway. (same above @ Chautauqua)

The mitochondrial DNA 4 haplotype could be considered the finest strain to thoroughbred racing history.
