  • He defeated Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike and Derby runner‑up Epicenter.
  • His Preakness (G.1) win was the defining moment of his career.
  • Progeny of Early Voting, 2YO colt Early Encore, suggests aptitude to lead early, make strong pace at the front @ I’m Smokin’ Stakes.
  • Another brave effort for the Early Voting colt, He is No Lie, runner-up @ G3 Iroquis Stakes.

Grand-sire Gun Runner – 4×4 Fappiano – 4×5 Blushing Groom – 5×4 Lyphard.

Fantastic typesetter – Fappiano has broodmare sire Dr. Fager (3×4 Bull Dog/Plucky Leige by Spearmint/Carbine ). His male line heads to 4sx4d distaff’s Sandiway by Clemence, the Martha Lynn family.

Pedigree students should (?) appeal affinity & link to Carbine & his descendancy (Chicle FR) arising 5 Martha Lynn strains. Add in Teddy @ Bend Or (Tadcaster not Doncaster) corrects family distaff @Clemence/Martha Lynn. (n.b. of interest, as claimed by Jack Glencarry N.Z. author, Tesio in his youth visited Australia and New Zealand and later to another of Tesio student John Aiscan in 1987 where citing remarks to the well-chosen Spearmint daughter in Catnip, 2nd dam Nearco. Spearmint notes to breed-shaper, Northern Dancer, 5×6 Spearmint/Carbine via dam Catnip & sire, Chicle)

Nearco’s dam: the Havreasac II mare Nogara (ex Catnip, by Spearmint). The photograph was in taken in 1939 when the mare was aged 11 years. (credit: Jack Glencarry’s Racing Miscellany)

Carbine started a sire line which was to gain international recognition and make an impact on English Derby history. His greatest product was undoutedly Spearmint, who won the 1906 English Derby. A bad-legged horse who cost only 300 gns, Spearmint was from Maid of the Mint by Minting. He beat a top Derby field and also won the prestigious Grand Prix de Paris. He was retired after only five starts. Carbine won the 1890 Melbourne Cup under 10.5, 147 lbs, 66 kgs by 2,1/2 lengths – a weight-carrying record for the 3200m.

Spearmint

Dr Fager carried weights up to 139 lbs. Under 134 lbs he shatters a world record.

Largely note: Miss Monica dam side – again Dr Fager @ 4th dam by Tasso by Fappiano. Her broodmare sire American Pharoah male-line 4th Fappiano.

@American Pharoah – En Gran Senor from dam Sex Appeal by Buckpasser/Tom Fool/Menow/Pharamond/Selene, a dam with 3×4 War Admiral + 4×5 La Troienne. His distaff @ Minnetoka (dam of Elliptical) 6×6 Plucky Liege as sired by Chieftan.

Typesetting: 2x Blushing Groom by Red God (Nasrullah – Spring Run by Menow) has (5x4x4 Blandford) with a strain to Menow & Bull Dog (Teddy/Plucky Leige) .

@Dam side – Miss Monica @ 2nd dam @ Cherokee Run >> Blushing Groom

Blushing Groom was the complete two year old. Outstanding two-year-old in Europe in terms of pace that he possessed the speed to beat high-class opposition at sprint distances, and outstanding in terms of stamina, in that he was able to win a top-class race over what is regarded as a stayers course for first-season performed. An attractive, well-grown individual as two year old, he had the physical development of a three-year cold. He acted well on soft going (notes F. Mathet, France 1976)

upfront Miss Monica profiles > 3x Storm Cat (Storm Bird/Northern Dancer noting Storm Bird b/m sire runs to male line Bull Lea/Bull Dog) + Secretariat & notably distaff, 4th dam Menow by Pharamond (Selene)

Plucky Liege (1912) by Spearmint out of Concertina (1896) by St Simon out of Comic Song (1884) imported into France 1915 as the immortal name of this great broodmare is dam of six great stallions, Sir Gallahad III, Bull Dog, Quatre Bras II, Admiral Drake, Bel Aethel and Bois Rousel. Sir Gallahad was champion stallion in U.S.A four times in 1930,1934, and 1940 and his full brother, Bull Dog, in 1943. Admiral Drake made history in France but the “Benjamin” among Plucky Liege progeny foaled in 1935 when she was twenty-three years old, Bois Roussel. Bois Roussel’s great win in the Epsom Derby 1938 is still history. Bred by Monsieur Leon Volterra, in whose colours Bois Roussel, a son of Vatout, won his first race, the Prix Juigne at Longchamp in a field of seventeen, and afterwards sold to Mr Peter Beatty. Bois Rousel’s only race in England was for the Derby, which he won by four lengths from Scottish Union Pasch and nineteen others. Returning to his native country to run for the Grand Prix de Paris, in which Bois Roussel finished third to Nearco. (Racing Review Annual 1952)

Where stationing Plucky Leige/Spearmint @ Miss Monica’s sire Early Voting, his distaff @3rd dam by Chieftan dam Pocahontas by Roman by Sir Gallahad. Again, 3rd dam Silken Doll b/m sire Buckpasser by Tom Fool/Menow (Bull Dog) & War Admiral, to his 3rd dam Bathing Girl by Spearmint.

Miss Monica dam-side, 3rd dam Virginia Bee, grand-sire Riverman again Roman by Sir Gallahad.

Overall, Miss Monica ‘type’ inheritances are to those individuals who were & are the remarkable ‘elite’ breeders, remarkable weight carriers, dynamic front runners holding speed and stamina.
