Black Caviar, Court Martial, Toronado

A day short of her 18th birthday the great Australian mare Black Caviar passed.

In a class of her own – she truly captured people’s admiration around the racing world to enchant young and old alike including the late Queen, Queen Elizabeth II, after her Royal Ascot win.

RIP the Imperial, Black Caviar.

🏆Her star pedigree shall so remain and her female family distaff (f.f.1-P) blue-hen regarded, fondly termed Black Caviar family as its development arises from https://www.ttrausnz.com.au/edition/2020-09-25/blue-hen-helsinge-legacy-continues-to-live-on

The Legacy lives on and once again this wonderful family line in 3yo Australian colt Theblade (Toronado (IRE) – Brigite (Aus) ex- Casino Prince. Pedigree link⬅️

Pedigree Notes @ family 1-P & William the Third influence 👉👉➡️ (link)

Before any analysis began on Theblade’s sire Toronado, our hunch that Court Martial had to be present. Court Martial comes in to the broodmare sire of Sassafras (Fr) through his son Ratification (GB) as 4th dam sire to sire Toronado (Ire).

🐴🐴🐴Court Martial https://www.pedigreequery.com/court+martial from distinguished female family 1-P as also so Theblade in distaff. Notably, female affinities thru to i) William the Third ii) daughter ain female-ancestor Winkipop. At William the Third by St Simon with son Roseland sire of Garron Lass, 2nd dam of Bahram and sire of Big Game to Toronado 6th dam sire.

The female co-affinity further assigns – Broodmare sire Casino Prince thru Belle of Ireland (dam of Kenmare (Fr), Gay Crusader in Djebel, Big Game/Bahram, 3rd dam sire Foxhunter from dam Trimestal, Donatello in mare Garden Green (3rd dam of Casino Prince) & Vatout tail male descendant Faubourg (FR). We also have Nashua b/m sire 5×5 Mr Prospector with Count Fleet thru Contessina & Display sire of Discovery as b/m sire Native Dancer. (Female co-affinities are linked in Gravity – Pitti – Florence – Contessina. ).

Darshaan in Toronado – 5×3 Umidwar b/m sire Bridaine (FR) from a William the Third daughter Bitter Orange. Darshaan sire Shirley Heights – 6×4 Djebel > Gay Crusader, Count Fleet, Shirley heights 2nd dam sire Grandmaster (IRE) of the Vatout line.

Theblade – 5x5x5 Danzig – note his sire Northern Dancer to b/m sire Native Dancer is a strain to William the Third from son Nassovian. Plus, Danzig’s 3rd dam by Felstead from dam Felkington where her dam Comparison, a daughter of William the Third.

Indeed the inter-relationship complexity to William the Third in its collective mass is phenomenal. Finding William the Third’s influences rather than pinning upon St Simon alone paramount.

Without William the Third, sire of 1,000 Guineas winner Winkipop, there would be no Court Martial, or a Black Caviar family. Vale Black Caviar.

And in conclusion, following the colt Theblade, is terribly exciting!!

THEBLADE is pretty happy with himself after his impressive debut win at Randwick today 😏 pic.twitter.com/9Bxy4bZmtJ

Son of Choisir (AUS) Starspangledbanner stallion went from earlier fertility issues to the fortuitous sire. https://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/the-remarkable-journey-of-starspangledbanner/

His sprinting stars are indescribable. Having often wondered what are the intrinsic roots making their remarkable influence, we went by evaluating close female relationships and came to uncovering a genetic parallelism. And once again by probing Black Caviar and Winx. Further, what went found acquaints old racing stars: Phar Lap, Donatello, Beppo (Marco), Shirley Heights (3x Pitti + 3x William the Third) where their stand-out influence comes helpful to finer appreciating the sire Starspangledbanner through VAIN & 4th dam sire Zamazaan + Gold Sovereign broodmare sire William of Valence (Fr) by Vatout (Fr).

The newer profound influence through 2 closely-related dams (f.f.2-e) Pitti progeny & Gravity dam of William the Third (St Simon) & thereof, Felstead, Carbine male-line descendant. To uncover the complex significance, it is necessary to recover its elite similar arrangement upon four-time Champion Australian Racehorse of the Year, Winx & World champion sprinter of 135 rating, Black Caviar.

Winx – the relevance of William the Third & Pitti

Nassau- a son by **William the Third, his daughter Sebenico grand-dam of Theico, the 3rd dam of Vegas Street. A further gentic-affinity in Donatello as 2nd dam sire in Sovereign Edition, with further affinity-female strains to Tehran + Count Fleet in Voodoo Rhythm (USA). 4x William the Third viz Dutch Mary, Mangalmi, Nassau, Sebenico. 4x Count Fleet – Prince John/Hold Your Peace & Riverman & Mr Prospector. Bahram in Hethersett & son Persian Gulf, Donatello in High Hat & sire Alycidon, Bois Roussel by Vatout to Hornbeam, Bellini (ITY) from Minnow by William the Third to Hoist the Flag, Bellini’s male line descendant.

Black Caviar – the relevance of William the Third & Pitti

2 daughters by William the Third – Third Trick & Comparison in Felstead + Desert Sun/6th dam in Felstead. William the Third sire of Winkipop (thru Court Martial) Bahram sire of Big Game, Donatello sire of Alycidon + grand-sire in Solderini where Solderini’s 2nd dam sire has Atout Maitre (Fr) by Vatout. Bois Roussel by Vatout in Hornbeam + Bois Roussel/Vatout the sire of Migoli with his b/m sire Bahram again in Desert Sun. Bois Roussel by Vatout, sire of Tehran >Kurdistan 4th dam sire Bel Esprit, sire of Black Caviar.

**William the Third (essential detail @ link, William the Third)

More on the sire, Starspangledbanner (AUS) than what can be believed!

With antipodean blessings for breeders, Zamazaan served both Australia and New Zealand to become a Champion sire of Stayers to likes of multiple Gr.1 winner Beau Zam (5x William the Third thru Dutch Mary (Donatello)/Minnow to Bellini (ITY), Mangalmi (Sovereign Edition) + with dominance in Carbine‘s influence. Zamazaan sired Veloso (Sydney Cup Gr.1 & AJC Spring Handicap Gr.1 winner – Good Lord double winner of the Wellington Cup Gr.1. Multiple G1 winner Lord Reims (NZ) & Lord Relic (NZ) sight, b/m sire Bismark > Wilwyn 3×4 William the Third.

Zamazaan (16hands) – bred by the Aga Khan he came to New Zealand for the 1970 breeding season. Zamazaan was rated the best stayer in France in 1969 and achieved a high Timeform rating of 126. Zamazaan by Blandford – b/m sire Tulyar, male-line Vatout, his 2nd dam Vaya by Beppo from Pitta. Zamazaan’s distaff has King William by William the Third

Vain/Zamazaan + Gold Sovereign b/m sire William of Valence (Vatout) @Starbangledbanner cross Darshaan son of Shirley Heights (Count Fleet + Vatout) + Tehran/Bois Roussel by Vatout + Felstead, Court Martial in Long Row 2nd dam sire of So You Think. Pinza (b/m sire Donatello). Further evaluated below…

Long Row – 2nd dam sire of So You Think (NZ). Long Row has 4x William the Third (Winkipop, Comparison 2nd dam of Felstead– 4th male descendant Carbine, Karenza dam of Ethnarch, son/sire Roseland by William the Third). Further the co-relationship to Long Row’s 3rd dam sire Atout Maitre (FR) by Vatout is of same female distaff to William the Third’s dam Gravity as related by grand-dam Enigma.

Puchkine’s 3rd dam Patrimony by Cadeaux Genereux, European 3yo champion sprinter. Cadeaux Genereux same female family as Desert Sun, (b/m sire Black Caviar) hence Donatello & Bois Roussel in L’anguissola . Felstead, Tehran/Bois Roussel in Sharpen Up. Tamerlane – male line to Bahram, in Young Generation

4×4 Danehill i) sire Danzig 3rd dam by Felstead, his 2nd dam of William the Third. Danehill b/m sire His Majesty, the 4th sire Bellini (Ity) has 3rd dam Minnow by William the Third.

It is a privilege to show full measure of the St Simon son William the Third, to the dam family in Gravity, Pitti & Contessina – an old classic staying family but perhaps more true its mercurial ‘turn of foot’.

And for the breeding wise – https://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/haras-de-beaumont-buys-into-jean-prat-winner-puchkine/

Court Martial, Fair Trial, Hyperion, Lyphard, Surumu

3yo gelding: Cosmic Speed (Querari – Cosmic Dream (Saf) ex- Silvano (Ger).

The pedigree places 5×4 Lyphard + 4×5 Surumu where a continuing impact of these two sires can easily be described as dominant.

Working deep to these above lines revolves their genetic re-appearance with formidable bloodlines as described below,

Lyphard (Nothern Dancer) dam Goofed by i) Court Martial ii) 5×5 Chouberski (#BT)

Surumu – a Bay Ronald sire line – Tantieme – Relic – Hyperion

Painstaking, intelligent, sometimes intuitive choice of a maternal grandsire can lead to the creation of celebrated nicks, where the blending of two sire names leads to the production of a new, superior brand of racing animal.

Ross du Bourg (Primacy of the Genes)

As “nuts and bolts,” pedigree the lineages have extensive influences yet for a certain prominence in the ‘few’ emerge as exceptional.

One must be on a constant watch for emergent genetic affinities.

The principle requires what may exert tremendous influential trait, through the contemporary pedigree, to a well-considered pre-potency quality.

Here, we discuss

🐴Court Martial by Fair Trial (Fairway)

TBL did not know the Court Martial pedigree template was beforehand evident. There was a chestnut stallion by the name of Way In (GB) by Fairway and he was exported to Italy. He produced a good quality steeplechaser by the name of Galatian (GB) and a Italian mare Feiro De Rio. Feiro De Rio was a G1 Oaks winner and produced Feria, a champion 3yo filly in Italy – she produced the US bred Gyr & Berkut (both by Sea Bird). Berkut produced Alydars Best, a G1 winner at 2 years. Gyr produced a G1 winning French bred son, Bon Sang (Fr).

Renowned Pedigree analyst Harold Hampton considered the Fair Trial thoroughbred pedigree as ideal.

Fair Trial – a high class English sprinter-miler who could carry his speed to 10 furlongs. He was a burnished chestnut with a prominent white blaze and three white socks.

Fair Trial – ranks as the most influential all-purpose sire line to make their mark. The Fair Trial line produced outstanding sprinters and milers, in addition to many winners of Derbies, Oak, St Legers, Quineas, weight-forage, 2mile handicaps and ever the Melbourne, Caulfield and Doombden Cups.

Fair Trial was an imposing individual, combining quality and strength who turned a foot out, a trait often discernible in his descendants. He got a consistent stream of good racehorses, whose salient quality was speed, and passed on his beautiful temperament to nearly all of his stock. – John Hislop

The Fair Trial earliest influences are ‘built’ to Cosmic Speed distaff @ 9×8, following on thru his son Court Martial 3rd dam sire of Elliodor (FR) – 2x Goofed – son Petition, 2nd dam sire of Danzig.

Fair Trial son Fairthorne (IRE) was a tremendous influence to the South African studbook as leading sire six times. The male line continued with F.T grandson Damask the 5th dam sire of Cosmic Speed.

(n.b. the classic-speed traits – what serve world calibre distinction are immersed in lines (ie Lyphard’s Court Martial/Goofed/Chouberski) came coeval. The 1951 French bred Court Martial son Affreux who served successfully in Australia, had produced the middle distance freak racing machine Winfreux. Winfreux was a holder of three Australian time records for the old imperial distance through 8 1/2 furlongs 9 furlongs and 11 furlongs and winner of 21 black-type races. Somewhat alike...Winfreux’s sire Affreux by Court Martial – to Chouberski male line in Hotweed (FR) 3rd dam sire at distaff. Hotweed’s siring son Pearlweed was exported to Argentina.

Family photo profiles of Fair Trial (here)

Surumu (Ger)

Leading sire in Germany 1984. A German Derby winner defeating the runner -up by 4 lengths. Ken Mclean (Designing Speed in the Racehorse) points to Surumu’s 3rd dam’s in-breeding to Sierra and Sainfoin (from Sanda) then further to Papyrus. Fair Trial takes 5×5 Sanda through Sainfoin and Sundridge.

Influences @Hyperion thru Owen Tudor ➡️➡️➡️male-descendant , Spanish Air (GB) whom stood in South Africa. Distaff 4th dam, Have Faith 4×5 Owen Tudor. OT ➡️Blushing Groom to the 5x Owen Tudor to multiples 8x Selene, dam of Hyperion.

Refinement is Subtle – 6×6 Herbager sire of Big Spruce (USA) & daughter Ballade (USA) dam of Devil’s Bag, champion 2yo colt. Herbager is 4x5x5 to Phalaris and the b/m sire Sainfoin affinity is apparent. What needs to be pointed out is that Herbager is a male line to Bosworth (from dam Selene) further to male-line Bay Ronald (as noticeably, Surumu).

Surumu x Court Martial 3x male crosses are ‘in’ typology to Bay Ronald.

Here, was a potential stallion from a different sire line that might just suit North American bloodlines. Ken McLean on ‘Bull’ Hancock’s calculated risk to purchase Herbager.
