Recent events prompted a re-evaluation regarding ancestry types, particularly references as native or half-bred pedigrees which lacked formal lineage to entry of the Studbook.
It was by reading and uncovering layers with expertise in fellow US researcher **Kathleen Kirsan 2) geographic and 3) economic scholarly subjects which gave a much finer comprehension to the general accepted narrative regarding the thoroughbred racing horse.
Previously TBL Posts @ Thoroughbred Link are written to note or regard forgotten pedigree individuals and hopefully diversity of female-families to revive, regenerate, and continue. As the yearly foal numbers continuously drop this equates to a sire’s dam’s family which within the few generations are not replenished, and potential diversity falls away.
Whilst hypothetical, Haplotypes upon pedigrees has been useful to comprehend the phenotype. The antiquity Studbook makes smoke n’ mirrors. and yet there are certainly very important stallions we never entirely acknowledge to with their few mares of 3-4 descendants – those that pop up.
they were genetic freaks and no one really never KNEW
Some made it through, some didn’t, and some slipped in unnoticed…(thank goodness)
As breeding history comes…how obvious it reasons: the morphological capacity is true key to gravity light, weight and efficiency of energy. The very thing the RH went designed to, destined for and are superior for.
This was the essence: a morphological character to overall speed and stamina, electric turn of foot all competitively in-built. The records tell us more than pedigree.
Let’s do think, why did the New Zealand mare Horlicks race 17 wins from 1200m to 2400m and her distaff descendant Mr Quickie take out G1 wins from 1600m – 2400m. Is it today even achievable to breed or race like so?
And so it is to those half-bred which phenomenally did exist & still as its finding in no.2 world racehorse City of Troy (Justify) reaching the Australia/New Zealand colonial bred from the great Musket himself into US breeding lines.
Those ‘Musket’ days were all a breed to themselves remembering also he sired Carbine.
Foul Shot (NZ) – ARC Welcome Stk, Northern Derby (NZ) (won in stakes-record time, then won 2 mile race same afternoon).
Foul Shot is 3rd dam sire of Double Jay (USA) broodmare sire of Nodouble (USA) – 4th dam sire to the dam of City of Troy.
Artillery (NZ) – 2nd dam sire On Watch (USA) broodmare sire Market Wise (USA), arriving to City of Troy’s 5th dam General Store.
Most colonial bred horses are @ Haplotype L4.
In City of Troy’s pedigree you will find another L4 in a mare called Coquelicot dam of Pavot which also runs to City of Troy’s distaff. Remember Coquelicot because she runs to River Lady dam of the sire in Riverman, as seen to sire Street Cry and others as he appears.
Musket – a supreme breed, a nucleus to colonial bred families.
Its been a few years since reviewing New Zealand sire pedigree El Roca.
His 3yo filly Krementz (by El Roca) from dam Cashenti ex-Conatus (Danehill), pedigree.
Firstly, let’s never forget the history built to the Australian and New Zealand breeding scene. So many exceptional influences like Pipe of Peace tail-male Hurry On, Wilkes & Star Kingdom, & earlier the Australasian sire of sires, *Musket.
Musket put the fledging New Zealand thoroughbred industry on the map in one stroke. Beforehand Musket was a virtual unknown. He had been bought in England in the late 1870’s, shipped to New Zealand for a career as a sire of carriage horses. In his first season he served only three stud book mares. His son Martini-Henry won the Victoria Derby and the Melbourne in his first two starts. Australians began scrambling for progeny of Musket. Musket sired a stream of top class horses, that climaxed less than a month before his death in 1885 by the birth of his champion son Carbine, a magnificent bay who galloped the Australian turf like a giant. (November Gold – Max Lambert)
Old Genetic power bring forth…Krementz is a 1400m winner. 4 starts – 2 metro win, 1 – 2nd place. Note her conformation below.
Haplotype L4 for stamina, speed and weight. It is evident a L4 Haplotype geno complements an extraordinary phenotype ability. With few family exceptions, L4 belongs to the Family 2 but one special ancestress dam calls it big, Martha Lynn, f.f. 2-h and holds to the distaff family of Carbine.
Carbine shot through the field like a thunderbolt. 1890 Melbourne Cup report.
Further to this L 4 Haplotype (female family 2-r) has *Miss Kate’s daughter Catherine Wheel, a grand-daughter of *Musket. More so, f.f.2-r famed to Phar Lap (5×5 Musket) & a distaff, 3xAustralian Horse of the Year Sunline.
(female family 2r distaff @ Blazing Saddles (AUS) a son of **Todman, the 3rd dam sire Krementz
*Miss Kate (f.f.2-r) was dam of Perkin Warbeck (NZ) and he appears to the sire El Roca @ 9th dam.
3×3 Danehill @ 9 strains Carbine, noting Danzig’s 3rd dam ***Felstead is a tail-male Carbine/Musket. Noting...Danehill’s distaff hails from Mother Goose (Chicle) by Spearmint by Carbine (+ noted to Northern Dancer & Halo).
-***Felstead notes to El Roca via Millionaire’s 4th dam & as is, Bletchingly 3rd dam by Felstead.
Felstead was the 1928 Derby winner and his daughter Rockfel was a 1938 Oaks winner. Her breeding fame & son Rockefella (Hyperion) produced Rafha (4×4 Rockefella) dam of Invincible Spirit (IRE). Rockefella is 2nd dam grand-sire to Sunline (commented above)
Krementz 5th dam by Star Kingdom’s son Shifnal (dam Oceana) at 6 strains Star Kingdom, additionally > 6sx5D **Todman from same dam Oceana.
Oceana is f.f. 1-u and takes co-affinity to Selene, f.f. 6-e aka 15x Hyperion and 3x Big Game @ L3a1b Haplotype. (n.b. bloodlines.net indicates studbook errors)
The Star Kingdom influence through sons, grand-sons and daughter descendants was Australasian breed-shaper. Star Kingdom goes enormous and it is Todman, Biscay son Bletchingly, Marscay, Zephyr Bay marks superior classic quality. (Check blog Ripcord (AUS) – run me like a racehorse & dam-side G1 winner – RIFF ROCKET by American Pharoah
8dx7d Pipe of Peace (the #GA male-line, tail-male Hurry On). Pipe of Peace hails f.f. 22-d, 3rd dam Infra Red, has distaff-line same Mill Reef, the sire of Millionaire and sire of El Roca 2nd dam Mill Rani. The family 22-d has L3a1a Hapotype (n.b. Mill Rani’s daughter Millrich is dam of Redzel – 2017/2018 Everest winner and dam of sire Danerich).
8x7x7 Relic (via, Bletchingly, Soviet Star, Rory’s Jester, the #GA male line, US bred strains to Man O’War – essential prototype. It is the superior, classic blue-print explosion ancestral and nucleus male lines #GA, as is #BT upon Rubiton.
Krementz’s 8th dam by Pherozshah – the half-brother to Mahmoud f.f. 9-c, empress Mumtaz Mahal ). The Aga Khan bred sire Pherozshah came to New Zealand in 1944.
Clock the Mahmoud daughters thru Northern Dancer, Danehill, His Majesty, 2nd dam sire Roan Rocket with Pherozshah + Venture (Relic) b/m sire of Soviet Star
Mumtaz Mahal pouring through e.g. Nasrullah, Abernant, Prince Taj, Lucky Bag, Tudor Minstrel, Fair Trial, Royal Charger, Badruddin where her far-reaching genetics are pure Powerhouse. And cleverly, diverse ‘Mutiple’ across i.e. subtle female affinities factoring
the family number 9-c has L1a Haplotype
And so, as the Musket/Carbine/Spearmint era went by – their breeding further exploded that goes beyond anything else: the female contributor and influential Plucky Liege where sired by Spearmint cannot ever go genetically annulled. She is the dam of Sir Gallahad, full brother Bull Dog, half-brothers Admiral Drake and Bois Roussel.
@ Krementz pedigree, Plucky Liege influences are seen to Buckpasser, Admirals Voyage, Nijinsky, Royal Academy, Only for Life/Millionaire/El Roca, Habitat, Blazing Saddles (AUS)
(n.b. Plucky Leige is extremely influential to numerous US Derby winners like White Abarrio – to catch, White Abarrio
Indeed further classic factors course to Krementz with Wilkes (7d x 6d). Wilkes was a three times champion Australian sire and notably four times champion sire of 2 yr olds. Also of Krementz pedigree, Soviet Star (USA) – his bloodlines may be better remembered by the name of New Zealand bred Starcraft – Australian 3yo champion and sire of Star Witness.
waste not genetics – they can come hot
Carbine might never have left Australia but for a bank crash which forced Wallace, a wealthy grazier and racehorse owner and breeder, to sell up. Purchased by the Duke of Portland, Carbine was shipped to England to the Duke’s Welbeck Abbey Stud, where he stood alongside St Simon. Several thousand people flocked to the dockside in Melbourne to say farewell when Carbine was loaded on to the steamer for England. (November Gold – Max Lambert)
🐴 Musket daughter Ante Diem was sent to Argentina in 1884.
The ANTE DIEM family has accounted for at least 19 Argentine Classic winners, among them 1931 Triple Crown winner MINERAL, as well as many other winners of top races in both Argentina and Brazil. Ante Diem include genetic giant sire, Penny Post (Embrujo).
– Kingston Rule by Secretariat out of Rose of Kingston by Claude (ITY).
… the young colt grew up in Kentucky on the property of its Australian, owner/breeder merchant banker David Hains. Sent to France for a racing career he didn’t fire. The Secretariat colt was shipped to Sydney, to stables of Tommy Smith only to be ‘sent home’ for his poor runs. Only way is ‘up’ and onwards to the ‘famed’ Melbourne Cup stables of Bart Cummings: this nervy, awkward shy youngster was a job to be understood and this was Bart’s training forte. Let him be happy.
Could he ever be a contender for the Melbourne Cup?
In those ten ‘working’ months under Bart’s watchful eye, the colt not only won but busted the 1990 Melbourne Cup course record and added to that, his jockey Darren Beadman had not touched him with the whip.
Kingston Rulestill holds the record today – the winning time of 3 minutes 16.3 seconds.
– With the look of eagles in his eye and copper lights in his coat, Kingston Rule seemed too pretty, too brittle, to be a contender. Bart made him one. Les Carlyon Turf writer
To stud-breeding matters, plenty of eyebrows where raised when owner-breeder David Hains imported a thirteen year old stallion Claude (Hornbeam – Aigue Vive, by Le Filou’s sire, Vatellor) from the Tesio brand, Dormello Stud, to stand at his Kingston Park Stud, south of Melbourne.
Hains was trusting his co-advisor the Australian golfing legend Norman von Nida whom, had turned his greater interest to horse-breeding. He prior told Hains, to the development of Hain’s breeding operation “This is the Place for a horse stud. I’ll buy the horses.”
Together, in another vein, David Hains with confidante Norman von Nida where to become the Australian version, to the ways of Federico Tesio.
The import stallion Claude, was an unbeaten Italian stayer, a sturdy type. He was to become the sire of mare, Rose of Kingston (AUS), a Australian Horse of the Year. Her achievements here
Together Hains & von Nida worked well, with reason to follow & import lesser known stout bloodlines to the australian soil. They stood behind these horses and many doubted the breeding product(s) as went the lack of appeal to another: Lowan Star, a multiple Australian Gr.1 winner (Lowan Star (Biscay – Ursula Lauderdale (ITY) by Claude.
Hains had placed an official reserve of $18,000 on her. Bidding stopped well short of this at $12,500 and Lowan Star was led out of the ring unsold¹
And extraordinarily another great, & Australian Horse Racing Hall of Fame
They could have had Kingston Town for $8,000 that day: that was the official reserve price placed on him. Lack lustre bidding crept towards $5,000 and stayed there²
With Kingston Town we’ve had the stars and I don’t think we deserved the moon…but we’ve got it³
Their innovative breeding skills came together through their study of finest classic; the Italian genes evolved by Federico Tesio had paved legacy – influencing ability with far reaching effect. Like produces like…
To this scrutiny re: genotype, patterns and supremacy it even stunned this writer what ‘fired’ to Kingston Rule, through those delicious depths of female distaff.
As Les Carlyon had stated “the theory of breeding and the the reality of the racetrack were one.”
Kingston Rule said much to be like his sire in phenotype, but the prototype lays it bare…
Where the diamond is forever it is because atoms do not change.
– there is the invincible prototype to the symmetry of these horses, the superior thoroughbred.
Kingston Rule thru 5th dam, inbred 2x’s to Carbine (f.f.2h) by Musket (f.f. 3) via his son Wallace (AUS) , the female family 3. These 3 ‘roots’ are endowed ( oversimplified explanatory) as to their Bylerley turk origin.
– 4th dam sire Powerscourt (AUS) to his 3rd dam sire Trenton, by Musket. Powerscourt 2nd dam grand-sire Ayrshire (Hampton by Lord Clifden, from the Martha Lynn dam family.
– Better Boy (IRE) 3x’s Ayrshire ⇒ 10x’s Lord Clifden + include the 8x’s Bend Or, where his dam is thus correctly, genetically proven to the Clemence/Martha Lynn line. n.b. this Bend Or factor totally trans-figures, inter-locks every known pedigree.
– Hornbeam 4th dam grand-sire Trenton by Musket. 2nd dam sire Bois Roussel, his dam Plucky Leige by Spearmint by Carbine by Musket.
– Nearco, 2nd dam by Spearmint by Carbine by Musket.
Kingston Rule died in 2011. Here is a delightful video one month before his passing.
