Millrich, Miss Kate, Phar Lap, Redoute's Choice, Redzel, Snitzel

Colours n’ hood of sports car fire-red, the Australian bred Redzel showed no mercy in his back-to-back Everest win.

Yep…like an antipodean hero (a Sir Edmund Hillary mountaineer quote): Redzel ‘knocked the bastard off’ and the prize-money is in the bank.

History cheers like that. Echoes for many a time to come.

Equine heroes always are something special – more than we shall ever know.

In this TBL blog we explore ‘something’ many fans out there might like to know.

Whip out the pedigree & let’s Go!

TBL aficiando spine-chills …..

Redzel by Australian sire sensation Snitzel from dam Millrich (female family 27) ex- Rubiton, the broodmare sire.

Now if you get to know bloodlines workin’ &cruisin’ them traits: they’re genes which keep pedigrees cookin’ long and slow. It is peculiar to the mitochondrial DNA; the maternal thrust & this is the most best kept secret if you wish to get about & scout a thoroughbred of your own.

Importantly, this is the meaning of Ancestry.

Devils in details: infusions built-into maternal from greater predecessors; they are the ‘predictors’.  Not statistics.

TBL went time-travellin’ back through the Redzel pedigree. The greater breeders understood a phenomenon that the further you see back, the further you see forward.

At TBL we target EACH maternal as highly individualistic. The merits ‘why’ certain bred individuals ARE distinctive. Its not simple, but ‘digs’ the pedigree honest.

Remarkabley Redzel’s dam Millrich (AUS) through her furthest maternal line has New Zealand old familial roots where a sire infusion near, direct IN has the female family 2-r, from a sire called Perkin Warbeck (NZ) from none other than dam & ancestress Miss Kate.

Miss Kate is the 4th dam of Phar Lap and is one of the oldest and richest tap-root families to the antipodes.

Sunline (NZ), inductee of Australian Hall of Fame, is another Miss Kate descendant.

There is more… exclusive stuff. The Millrich, female-family 27 (further back) derives from Rataplan, his dam Pocahontas (GB) & Rataplan was full-brother to Stockwell. In essence, these are great, great greater grand-daddies sum total of thoroughbreds.

It was the work of a writer & pedigree analyst (since deceased) Marianna Haun through her study of the great Secretariat which stunned the equine world; the bigger heart of superior runners with her X-heart gene thesis.  reference http://www.horsenation.com/2015/06/04/secretariats-genetic-x-factor-the-secret-to-the-triple-crown/

In a nutshell Secretariat sourced X-factor mightiness from Pocahontas.

Miss Kate/Rataplan,Stockwell/Pocohontas are the Mitchondrial DNA back-bone to Redzel’s dam, Millrich.

Now many sceptic-nature, might just scoff that ancestry just cannot spike genes to the immediate here n’ now.

So we shall explore the direct pedigree from a 5th-remove landscape. 5th remove is where the ripe genetic action is.

In simple form Redoute’s Choice (sire of Snitzel) via Danzig, and his broodmare sire Canny Lad via his sire Bletchingly (AUS) are the traits to the one n’ same ancestress Mowerina.

And so IS – Millrich 2nd dam sire Millionaire (IRE)….ancestress Mowerina.

Scout deep a pedigree to Mowerina daughters and you shall see plentiful duplications to Stockwell/Pocahontas. nature genes

It is no wonder Mowerina ancestry via modern female family 7a configurations propels pedigrees and individuals to turf magnificence.

That’s how stars come out. That’s how stars are made. Heart n’ soul stuff.

Cheers for now, TBL cropped-nyme31478829496

Winx – workin’ them genes

She teases, she thrills & the mare dapples racing immortality.

We shall never have enough of Winx – the larger than life, legend.

We attempt to fathom more – that pedigree, the progeny of Street Cry (IRE).

Let us repeat…spectacular, superior and the more ‘champion’ of pedigrees are often more soooo deep, than not.

It is through ‘time’ and only ‘time’ we see the greater breeding expanse – sires and broodmares, champions and even with the ordinary, how they breed from a forgotten place.

We shall see Ancestry, is also the future writing.

The electrica Winx propulsion – a supernatural velocity without touching turf, impresses where her sire Street Cry transmitted make em’ tough upon many of his progeny. This trait I attribute to his broodmare sire Troy (GB), Europe’s champion 3 year colt. Further back, notice another phenomena, speed strain, that of Hornbeam.

img_20181013_110604-012073817888.jpeg

Troy won the 200th Derby by a remarkable seven lengths.

Hornbeam, of the female family 1-P, as also indexed to Black Caviar’s maternal line. Black Caviar: ‘diamonds’ within a pedigree. Take note Hornbeam, doubles his genetic presence via Al Akbar, Winx’s broodmare sire.

– (Al Akbar (AUS) by Success Express) What has the trait that places an almost obscure stallion, standing his years at Grangewilliam stud, Wanganui, New Zealand & came infused with his bloodlines to a phenomenal star performer.

But just for a mere moment, put the spotlight on Mossman (AUS) – Success Express (USA) from Lichen Lady (AUS), from the familial matron Lady Josephine i.e. FF 9c. Further note where the familial reinforces from double dosage (refer Solario (IRE) & Lady Josephine) by Sundridge **(read on below)

(additionally: if you like Success Express bloodlines, explore sire, Savabeel (AUS) by Zabeel, ex- Savannah Success by SUCCESS EXPRESS.)

A genetic pattern laid….& as they continually do!

*A Gr.1 winner at 2, Mossman placed in two legs of the 2yo Triple Crown. A truly exceptional sire. Tough and genuine, Mossman is the sire of Gr.1 winners PLUCKY BELLE, BUFFERING, MISS MOSSMAN, OFCOURSEICAN and MOSSFUN and was the Champion 2YO Sire in 2013/14. He has so far sired over 35 individual SWer’s, not bad for a stallion with an average foal crop of less than 60. credit source, Vinery Stud

Though its ‘common’ – (contemporary sire lines profusely limited to Northern Dancer, Mr Prospector), I find it personally beyond comprehension to find ‘how’ a precious impacting sire line, which descends ‘direct’ Prince John/Princequillo – a genetic all-time domination so beyond itself. Importantly these traits which find co-affinity, its infinity to that of Nasrullah.

The Nasrullah/Princequillo genetic mix remains a force to be reckoned with in the pedigrees of Group and Graded stakes winners. Ken McLean

****

Before Winx, there was another girl-power machine. She exhibited similar super racing abilities. Let’s see if we can twig-it.

The Eclipse champion older female 2008/09/10 – Zenyatta by Street Cry, ex-Vertigineux (USA) from Kris S.

Yes, different mare lines & yet to seek what must transcend ordinary into extraordinary is to comprehend the soul of superior performers. Again always the puzzle, to not only join genetic traits & dots but find n’ figure the genus where deeper central potential sits and waits.

I am not able to discuss statistics nor sciences, nor shall try – ONLY the very aim, where every pedigree sighted will demonstrate its ‘affinity’ construction, specifically.

Winx highlights a genetic dynamite via maternal ancestry. (Refer my article True Colours to reference an ancestor called **Sundridge.

And profoundly, Zenyatta through broodmare sire Forli also carries Sundridge. Plus, Forli’s sire IS Aristophanes (GB) Lady Josephine as I explain here.

In an instant the comprehension of genetic patterning layering is apparent. The sire ancestry Sundridge classic-genes, his daughter classy Lady Josephine, her daughter Mumtaz Mahal (aka The Flying Filly) formulate those same family roots akin to Nasrullah/Royal Charger.

Talk strains collectively, – Mumtaz Mahal , Mumtaz Begum/Mahmoud/Fair Trial: the female family index 9C.

img_20181012_130756-011506965952.jpeg
img_20181012_124709-011553502786.jpeg

In genotype/phenotype terms, this is what I define as genus.

It’s aficionado chills, where to collect & recollect Sundridge traits through pedigrees of Count Fleet(the 2nd dam sire to Mr Prospector) Prince John, Blue Larkspur, Eight Thirty. Get them collectively as per, the Success Express sire – Hold Your Peace (USA)….boom!

They are not-so-far-ago predecessors. Like, genetic ‘informants’ and also recycle loud n’ clear through Zenyatta’s broodmare sire Kris S.(USA) – 2nd dams sire Forli (USA) .

The BIG BANG genetics.

Those traits actually seize dominant homozygoisity; they qualify a natural determination of what is naturally integral to displace the heterozygoisity in the breed.
With my research, gratefulness & tribute, to the late and great Australian bloodstock writer & analyst Ross du Bourg who wrote ” The explosion in the world’s breeding population (allied with a much higher turnover of breeding stock and an increased reproduction rate) in the twentieth century has led to a savage and ongoing escalation of heterozygosity in the breed.”

Yet, the personal story is – Winx raises our admiration and an instinctive interest to what remarkable racehorses can be. As did, Zenyatta for her American racing fans.

Will there be another Winx?

Yes – but the oddity is, they will come forth from a non-fashion, not-hot broodmare sire, a non-commercial affordable: its genetics fired slow thereby marginalized statistically to inferiority class.

Impermeable genes, they serve singlehandedly and such sires quietly graze in a paddock just as I drove past Al Akbar, way back then.

Cheers

genus reflects: The Autumn Sun

Azmiyna (IRE), Danehill, Danzig, Galileo, Marske, Matchem, Redoute's Choice, The Autumn Sun

He (The Autumn Sun) had to do it all…he was still last at the 300m but what a powerful engine he’s got. – Kerrin McEvoy

– G.1 Golden Rose (1400m) victory

The Autumn One – 3 year old b. colt by Redoute’s Choice (AUS) – Azmiyna (IRE) from Galileo

https://www.pedigreequery.com/the+autumn+sun

https://www.racing.com/horses/the-autumn-sun

The Autumn One is a longstanding, deep-rooted pedigree of strong ‘type’. One which hails from the finesse of French thoroughbreds.

The maternal, Aga Khan bred dam: Azmiyna (IRE) a 1/2 sister to Group 1 winner and deceased sire AZAMOUR.

Genetics challenge & change. We must see how the dice rolls via evolutionary typology pathways where expressing origins as a genus-type to suggest what is truer to the dams innate character.

The type or genus is never definable easy, however families through ‘strain’ inheritances and of co-relationship ‘branches’, will POINT to thoroughbred formative origins & conceivably explain the similarity of like upon like relationship(s).

The emphasis – estimate what compels, what ‘fires’. Best procedure is to operate from PATTERN, distinction. It is these patterns that ‘tap’.

The concept of ‘linkage of genes’, particularly in a homozygous dominant state, is a vital clue to understanding how powerful and prepotent dynasties can evolve. Ross du Bourg

The ancestral establishment; what takes ‘within’ strains. View, via MATCHEM/MARSKE. Screen inter infusion of contributing ‘strains’, the DNA of strain inheritance present to this day.

matchem1711710468.png

From history traditions, it is to ‘credit’ the Goldolphin Arabian. It is also nowadays discussed, the family numbers are not always correct(?)

Yet, the REAL issue is to identify characteristics – traits which appear to feature dam lines as her inherent qualities & as originated from an ancestor.
This approach is to EXPRESS finest/purest/core to sporting a complexity – a natural arrangement, which goes through time itself.

The histogram chronicle has ancestral Young Marske mares indexed to strain/trait 7. Matchem indexed to strain/trait 4. Marske indexed to 8, his son Young Marske 12c.

Wider examination will expose a greater trait detail, but this will suffice for now.

The Autumn Sun sire: Redoutes Choice – enthusiasts of pedigree will keenly observe where Danehill sires dam Pas de Nom (USA) X Bletchingly (AUS) lines are 1 in same, through strain/line/ancestress Mowerina. And as is, Galileo’s 4th dam sire Espresso (GB).

The( ff-7a) index affiliates 7 strains. We adjudge these strains instrumental to developing genus & of homozygous nature. We again find ‘type/genus’ with deep commonality to that of (ff-4). Refer again the above.

Over & above conventional, the Northern Dancer paternal lines, we work from familial to engage the maternal cohesive, which is evident from the Samantha’s Choice (dam of Redoutes Choice)/Nijinksy/Relic (USA)/Raise a Native (USA)+ Blue Larkspur (USA) (refer Roberto) as ALL coming via the genus bloodlines, ancestral mares of Young Marske, sired by Marske. Refer above.

Software will assign algorithms per paternal replications.

The maternal pedigree expression should target genus prepotency domination, as the impact. After all, it is the female which leaves the Y trail.

The idea to capture is the collective dominancy foretelling destiny ahead. It emerges affinities.

Notice the dam, Azmiyna (ff-4i) alongside the 5th dam bloodlines. By genus-type the infusions shaping/moulding/infusing e.g. FF 7, 11, 12, 4. Look to Roberto (via Lear Fan (USA) FF 12C

So very often the how, to where prepotency exactly is laid, or sits within the maternal closest pedigree rather than the gestalt impressions, or those dependent on duplications is the definitive factors which fine-tunes a pedigree.

Again refer to the subjects pedigree: Ribot 5Sx6D as where it positions.

Ribot – the most generous creator of international racing talent in our time, and whose produce is now almost completely tested. Franco Varola 1974

Summarizing, our assertion is any backbone pedigree via repetition/ paternal ‘configuration’ does not establish the ferocity.

But.. female complementary strains activate and solve genetic latency.

Co-strain via utilizing female family indexes is not merely pairing off.

The breeding maternal principle is to arrive upon a best possible solution for perfect specimen, rather than fashion product which commonly over boils too many a pedigree.

That’s it for now.

Cheers

Chautauqua, Federico Tesio, female families, female family 24, Frankel, Stockwell, Touchstone, Tulloch

“the breed,” he said, “must not be lost” – Studmaster, Rowland Place ; mid 1600’s

In our last article…TBL clued readers that some surviving strains are indeed rare. Whether from impatience, fashion or ignorance, peculiar lines wilt, decline but shall resurrect and decline once more. From the ‘old-gold’ within ancestry, it appears within  few individuals to the present day.

There is a particular old female line which plainly haunts. In a nutshell, it was highly formative to the evolvement of thoroughbreds, although of those times, considered ugly mares ‘unfit’ for purpose yet they a tough, constitutional breeder-type in its day. This is the female family 24.

It kinda goes real interesting when we drop a racing name like Frankel, where his 7th maternal dam has Sir Cosmos (IRE) (see below)

The Australian grey-gelding & entertaining sprinting machine Chautauqua where viewing the maternal tap-root lines (@ 8th remove) , the female family 24 through a New Zealand mare, named Raceful, tracing through to Touchstone. (see below)

& remember, Tulloch – a New Zealand and Australian Racing Hall of Fame inductee. Tap-root female family 24 tracing through to Touchstone, and to the in-breeding of same line.

img_20180727_160751-011430018972.jpeg

“an equine genetic freak, a smallish specimen with muscular, rounded quarters an a driving will” – Ross du Bourg

(of female family 24) …..”earned imperishable fame as the sires respectively of Touchstone and Stockwell”

Stockwell (by The Baron (IRE), female family 24 from Pocahontas (3-n) !!! Stockwell, The Emperor of Stallions

Touchstone (by Camel (GB), female family 24 from Banter (GB) ff-14.

  • The Boss (IRE) 1910 (ff-24) where his son Sir Cosmo (IRE) has the broodmare sire of Round Table and Monarchy. His grandson Gold Bridge (FR) was the sire of Rough Shod II. Arthur B. “Bull” Hancock Jr. purchased Rough Shod II and the dam of Round Table, Knight’s Daughter, in England in December, 1951. credit source pedigreequery.com

Now you just might start jumping up and down confused, that a little speck of DNA dust can’t make the pedigree absolute.

As the lines have ‘expanded’, the dominant breeding re-develops to reverse back on to itself, and conceivably demonstrates we may thoughtfully identify the true breed-shapers themselves.

It always makes me ponder if this is what the legendary Federico Tesio realized, enabling him to achieve his exceptional success.

IMG_20180122_123820_1.jpg

Tesio’s co-contribution to the Bobinski tables

There is no doubt in my mind, that the ‘heat’ wave in a genetic template pedigree is hottest about 5th – 7th remove striking the parallels and genetic connections where ‘type’ goes to source.

Advice…. build cohesiveness between strains. It is imperative to capture the nature of consanguineous relationships over the generational phrases. It is magical.

Recognition is integral to hierarchal breeding.

Find the history, & enter its mystery.

Semipalatinsk (USA), Success Express (USA), Turn-To (IRE)

untitledSuperior pedigrees are the master, evolutionary templates.

We shall access their ‘unforgettable’ strains and their emergent strains.

Remember ‘thoroughbred’ originally meant carefully-bred.

In this blog-creation & its writings, we look at structure defining ‘devil-in-the-details’. TBL strongly advocates the maternal, as key-to-the-trade, the sweet-spot(s) of broodmare sires, grandsires as both ‘pivotal’ maternal and paternal nucleus important.

sweetspot

At grandsire/great dam ‘family-range’ beyond…. running back-through to the individual – view the cyclic families in generational rotation where past becomes  present & future, as if all in ‘unity’ accompanied with the penetrating strains which should define ability/capability.

Take importance why family relationships ‘bond’, strengthen to same band BUT incorrectly may ‘weaken’ (downgrade) bloodlines. IF families merge too close or to out-crossed the imbalance may occur and where TBL will say, many selected sires are just woefully & wrongly planned to equal ‘horse-wastage’ going nowhere. Its dysfunctional.

Additionally, within the workings it is helpful to digress where the rotational-generational cycle is sitting to ‘merge’ or create the best possible balance/structure. The better criteria and advantage to apply is within 5th – 7th removes.

use it or lose it…. wrap the lines, ‘strike’ upon strains by utilizing female family numbers

Also comprehend the ‘efficient’ maternal lines where they periodically ‘hold’  for 4/5 generations. Think Nature, the Sigmoid curve. sigmoid growth curve

The engine and structure has to go complete, innately so.  Do not just pin-point genetic-monsters: Mr Prospector, Northern Dancer, Native Dancer, Sunday Silence, Sadler’s Wells & others etc etc, as descendant sons & daughters progress/merge……..

The broodmares projected as black-type producers e.g. Dancing Show (8-f) does not mean fast track to superior progeny: they are however better ‘qualified’ in breeding circles at producing the black-type.

Dig into FAMILIES, BLOODLINE FAMILIES/GROUPS/BANDS which affiliate or co-affiliate.

( …. seem to recall where Federico Tesio would take importance at 7th, 9th, 12th generations.  There is further reference to it –  Thoroughbred Breeding: A MASTER OF TIME )

What would Nature seek to apply?

The  herd dynamics in wilderness, fires primordial force. What is her crucial rule upon an artificial mating/breeding terrain when unfashionable sire/mare meet,  CAN produce the spectacular California Chrome’s, American Pharoah’s, Sunline’s (providing this is the breeders aim, rather than the commercial here now, gone tomorrow….)

IMG_20171228_123635.jpg

Sunline

Back to the Wilderness –  we may think surviving, instinct, durability, tough. The matriarchal feral mare who smells ‘water’ and finds, or smells danger of wolf to lead the herd away from danger. And the feral stallion who must fight and select himself for supremacy and the right to breed. The ‘unwanted’ left to isolation and fend for themselves or tag along at distant. This is ecology in action.

(on stamina & breeding)…..  regarded ecologically as one of the assets of the breed, and one might even return to popularity at some future time. (1977) Franco Varola – Typology of the Racehorse

Could natural-intelligence ecology transmit to commercial environments. After all, it is a precocious foal who appears to know it has destiny.

The geno/phenotype verve, for speed & stamina is all encompassing but phenotype may not be thoroughbred-perfection, but the Verve raw vigour appearance, gait-spring, animus-intelligence,  x-factor plus as dual purposeful fit. In my eye it astonishes how individuals are missed and opportunity overlooked at auction.

Again….the focus at ‘highlighting’ mature grand-siring lines cannot be at all minimized. They’re influential, unique, ‘individualistic’: a short supply availability in the greater breeding population and think Nature plainly begs for dominant-diversity back-to-the-herd.

*TBL Diversity ‘hit-list’: they are the descendants from/via Success Express (USA):  Semipalatinsk (USA). semipalatinsk

Take note, stallion pedigrees – Savabeel (AUS) & Spirit of Boom (AUS) and of course progeny!!!! Plus, you know who *Winx – Winx’s phenomena. You might like to check out this blog: Moving on from Danehill

Bold Ruler (USA) is moving strongly. Think ‘on’ these old-master lines as diversity, a change from same duplication at in-breeding.

Again….let’s ask ourselves why would Nature keep at recycling ‘same’ XX, XY herd, and progeny without requirements of fresh diverse blood to the pool.

Great breeding is evolutionary ecological movement.

can’t swing if it ain’t got that thing…..

A short while ago, a $A1.5 million yearling sales result came through and cheering the achievement of vendor and purchaser it was a fantastic result for all concerned.

Uncovering the pedigree, examining the tail-female line, it was one of m’ Dad’s favourites AND his point of discussion at breeding towards genuine lines/genuine families.

Though Dad was a reputable breeder of stud Friesian cows, 40 years +. And, with the few thoroughbreds to play around with, he was perfectionist at heart: the familial breeding technique where his MAJOR BIG thing was endlessly screening for ‘purity’ – is it ‘direct’, near as possible to the ‘root’ at origin?

Understandably the reader may wonder what his experiences & dairying cows has to do with thoroughbreds but just, hang-in there……The TBL blog is about where/why/how breeding dynamics is a natural thing, contained within the artificial/domestic/business environment.

Dad was a diligent bastard. There he was without technology – reading 1000 times over ‘good’ history quality breeding books & other. He would go over and over diagrams, snippets of  information, read-between-lines, deduce and came upon ‘why’ the 13 family was not only Good, but THE – One.

He came out with the proverbial ancestral,  at to reinforcing, where ‘ALL’ goes back…. to Rachel, Highflyer, Regulus.

Like the ol’ boy, many theories come n’ gone, fade, forgotten. Its the yarning over the back-fence where many ‘unscripted’ understandings towards breeding ‘right’ for the sake of the superior animal and its bred-purpose and performance.

And, awkwardly the sort of stuff which the old Harry’s shall keep to themselves & store away; the observing eye, to develop an astute understanding towards animals & Nature.Existence. Survival. And, onwards strength as species.

Some years ago, when the thoroughbred Link blog was created, a Uruguay bloodstock analyst contacted TBL and interestingly, he also raised the undying Regulus strain. An ancestral strain to salute the pedigree…..

Whilst tricky to ‘know’ definitively what individuals ‘host’ the (R) strain where certain lines spike pedigree… the clues are enough through family-lines. It is to follow the trail….http://thethoroughbredlink.com/2017/11/01/breeding-dynamics-put-the-helmet-on/

One must comprehend & deeply that the thoroughbred is still hybrid – has composite bloodlines ( a mix).

To my mind, there are definitely numerous ‘family’ bands, which appear to stay truer, stronger to themselves. TBL thinks of these as the ‘top’ tier in the thoroughbred population.

However as it goes, amongst any breeding of bloodlines, if there is a selection, to an inappropriate mating-sire, which then becomes broodmare sire and that which inappropriately shall merge incorrectly (to the cycle/passage of breeding), I, TBL ‘O’pinionize and say yes, this is a horse…but will it race(?) and I shall say ‘ just very averagely.’ It will not be a superior performer. ( if my memory serves me right…Sir Patrick Hogan said something like where breeding-is-not-racing, racing-is-not-breeding.) Thoroughbred Breeding: A MASTER OF TIME

Often, Dad would take me out to the paddock and say “what a magnficient striking animal …(muscle and large bone) but for breeding he is a disaster down the track. You’ll get into trouble with the likes of these.”

And more recently, I head a lady commenting on tour, that the mares have gotten too big, too much bone. I mostly agreed but had to walk away and think, reverting to dad’s farming alchemy and animal management with my own past stud-stock experiences where chewing-the-gum upon todays racing & working through … where is-the-breed-going….?

To breed ‘perfection’ is not to only aim at genetics but the best optimal phenotype, & constitution, the ‘gait’ and its flexibility or elasticity to move ably, fleet-footed. Multi-faceted criteria’s which must take heavy consideration into a scheme of what-is-racehorse ideal. Yet furthering to that examination – 1) 2 year old speed-machines or 2) stayer shall mean sharp energetic distinction from the pure anaerobic to aerobic.

Such has been the improvement in the anaerobic capacity to todays thoroughbred and the total absence of aerobic improvement or it may even be decline of aerobic performance. These change of the last 30 years must be appreciated in any scientific study of todays thoroughbred. Because the thoroughbred has changed, the training and breeding management may no longer be applicable. The anaerobic horse is better, but as a consequence more physiologically fragile.

Reflections upon pedigree analysis always takes its past to foretell the future and in particular the present: un-noticeable features, remarkable trends which go without nicking sire algorithms and their volumes.

TBL believes great pedigree analysis is to view an unique breeding-plan which man & ‘Nature’ graciously shapes before our very eyes.

Instinctively, we seek a key-strain that eternally exists as a ‘carrier’, integral to all thoroughbred breeding.

That key-strain, like a nucleus peaks a breeding pattern like no other. It changes the breeding landscape to challenge conventional breeding, extending breeding to superior.

The strain, its genetic impact is not obvious. It deserves scrutiny. It is always in the maternal grandsire field and to quote the late, and great Ross du Bourg , an Australian bloodstock analyst foretold – “maternal grandsire, sire of the dam, whose genetic presence is usually seriously undervalued and ignored in sales catalogues. I believe the maternal grandsire can exert a pivotal influence for good or bad in a pedigree.” RB

Reviewing old notes, TBL once held a slight skeptic view of the deep Danehill, genetic wave upon the Australasian thoroughbred.

Danehill

With no offense to the immense quality of bloodlines it was due to the ‘type’ featured, which has surely changed, settled and absorbed.

The absolute reason what I couldn’t comprehend an enormity of Danehill bred, is where Danehill, Northern Dancer, Halo, Coup de Folie,  Machiavellian are all sourced from the same great maternal 2d family – Alamamoud/Mother Goose.

The shuttling sire model indeed challenged diversity to the global breeding populace. Conflicting perhaps a ‘too-closer’ relationship unable to erase its rich international presence. That’s okay, but one factor suggesting predicament; an over dosage and or, saturation point.

Too much of one thing is not always a good thing.

Saturation/dosage maybe fine IF intentional… has the greater forward breeding plan, as maternal lines settle through generational-breeding, intermingling 4th/5th generation.  Once through the settling-pond, Danehill broodmares integrate.

Danehill influences are well…the common to world international breeding: repeated history like Northern Dancer, Mr Prospector or as the Nearco era was.

Yet to breed the ‘new’ thoroughbred shall cry for variability, diversity from a rather contemporary and closing gene pool.

It is indeed thought-provoking to advise where/what is next?

And further….what true genotype/racing phenotype is ‘faultless’ for today?

With climate-change, racing conditions have become highly climatic variable and racing programmes of today’s environment with lacking consistency is order of the day.

Many high quality thoroughbreds fall through cracks for lack of opportunity where training & natural development, plus other bureaucratic policies certainly flaw the horses racing condition and experience.

Further, demand is placed on athletic, rockin’ and rollin’ 2 year sprint market jobs – desirable for cost-effective reasons.

Due to infinite variables in the game, beauty-in-the-eye-of-the-beholder and all that….TBL’s take is where we seek a physical specimen: a flexibility, robust but economic in physique & motion as inclusive keys to the changing demands of racing. Such types may easily go under the sale radar – the yearling deemed immature.

Genotype genetic twists and turns are contingent on greater ‘depth’: we think it is wiser to select lines which favour tenacity.

Time and time again we emphatically find it is not the in-breeding ‘Danehill’s’ as the pedigree stature, but a throw of genetic bang from almost forgotten sources.

Individualists.

Old breeding purists of old did say: nature seeks (breeding) purity.

Once the ‘force’ is recognised, the record is there as confirmation.

And so, extraordinarily, enthusiastically, we’re finding Australian freshman sire Spirit of Boom (home-bred and standing at Eureka Stud, Queensland ) refreshing – stimulating –   the desired transfiguration to fulfil genetic pre-potency as his ‘seeds’ ripened, majorly to a Hyperion expression, rather than Nearco. (which is another TBL notion, but one I uphold!)

*CHECK pedigree:  double presence of Thatch, the sire and descendant line of Hyperion (Gondolette female family ) AND as importantly the female- Thong/Simon’s Shoes 5-H. Know who’s who on the same directory….hint Sadlers Wells, Nureyev, Yeats and just take a genuine look at this young superlative sire.

By tuning into pedigree influences, important notational principles apply; to comprehend inherency over homogeneity.

The Spirit of Boom’s maternal grand-dam sire carries Semipalantinsk (USA) .

semipalatinsk.jpg

Semipalantinsk, american bred and Italian raced before being imported to stand at Eureka Stud, Queensland.

To reference, Semipalantinsk (USA) takes maternal siring influence where he also ‘types’ the phenomenal Savabeel maternal line. http://www.waikatostud.co.nz/savabeel

Reflect , world champion, Vengeance of Rain (Zabeel/Danelagh where Semipalatinsk is grand-dam sire and same pedigree AJC Oaks winner, the mare Dizelle.

We marvel the continuation, the Spirit of Boom progeny – four entries in the Magic Millions 2yo Classic: Jonker, Ef Troop, Outback Barbie, Spirits Pride.

With his first crop,  2yo runners producing 2 individual winners, 5 individual placers, all from 8 starts (7 in Australia, 1 in NZ) to simply read a TBL……wowyeah

So if you’re saluting Spirit of Boom, his progeny, caste your eye over maternal Bletchingly, Rockefella lines.

Evoke Vain, Wilkes, Court Martial – watch the recurrent folds.

Tap….Star Kingdom to.

Magic.

“Although he never stood above $5000, Semipalatinsk lays claim to be the most successful sire of quality performers to stand all his stud career in Queensland” refer http://www.thoroughbrednews.com.au/News/Story/21911

Helmet (AUS), New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run, Thoroughbreds

deanoTBL loves his game of chasing opportunity, feeling a ‘vibe’ through pedigree analysis and view the genetic jet-stream unfolding. It’s the hint of something ahead….something unfolding.

Our subject sire HELMET (AUS) ch. 2008 by EXCEED AND EXCEL from Accessories by Singspiel , impresses greatly. However, for any pedigree (better or worse) we might appreciate how old-breeding, to this day, can work its hand.

http://www.pedigreequery.com/helmet8

Moving away from obvious duplications i.e Native Dancer: Northern Dancer and his dam Natalma, to his sons – TBL anticipates the immersion of old German bloodlines via Antwerpen perfects the pedigree to another unique degree. It is worth observing, the cohesion of female families (4-o).

Advice: Remember to move away from reading pedigrees rectilinear. Read collective. View the greater female lines as ancestral familiarity clues inklings to source foundational. For example think, why is Nureyev/Special/Thong (5-h) dynastic?

To view back, we find ancestral wonder BLANDFORD (3-o) infusing, till time & breeding Forli (3b) infuses in to breed broodmare star SPECIAL. Bang.  We see ‘waves’, or multi-dimensional contraction working up the quantum impermeable.imagesKE9DFLQZ

Always explore new connections as to ‘why’ families are nicking/merge as to how/where lines revolutionize from lineage the pedigree spectrum offers a new and rewarding angle.

And….what is the beginners’ tool – the Bruce Lowe family numbers. Reference Thoroughbred Breeding: A MASTER OF TIME . People, you need to know key families !!!

Auntitled

Debateable as family numbers are to some, it is mighty hopeless for broodmares  which aren’t geared to breed into/onto some siring bloodlines, and hence off-spring are certainly horses but not racing destined ‘true’ – miserable outcome is…..forsaken progeny.

Much conventional analysis relies on statistics, sire factors alone with racing merits – the breeding-to-sell stratagem. Or replica styled breeding, to ‘clone’ another that becomes in-breeding too early – expecting  results before genes will moderate/meld somewhere into pedigree engine-rooms, for later generational stimulus.

Analysis programs cannot establish results, till progeny numbers are on-the-ground. For many, deemed lesser sires, numbers can never be on the ground. It will only be the ONE and bare few across the collective, breeding numbers.

Shine light… on broodmare(s) with precise breeding genetics, (meaning certain stallion female gene-pools/qualities) usually spring infrequent.  If they do, they can accomplish the necessary ‘individuality’, through unique crosses.

Those ‘crosses’ are the substance.

Substance towards unique breeding, unique individuals arrive intermittently due to prior breeding upgrades and backbone maternal parentage. The variety and diversity of a country’s distinctiveness, boutique & small studs with their standing stallions left the stage yesterday but what they did and continually ‘do’, make a contributing variance.

By noticing Generational stimulus from the back-line as where pedigree ancestors converge where it matters – zones 5th & beyond: the genetic spring has to strike.

To screen Helmet’s winning progeny:

Thunder Snow (IRE) bay colt 014 from Eastern Joy – Limestone (AUS) 2014 gr filly – Archives (AUS) ch.C 013 – Lady of Course (IRE) ch.F – Anda  Muchacho (IRE) C.2014 – Taamol (IRE) C. 2014 – Eqtiraan (IRE) b.c. 2014

Split markers become evident – not always the Northern Dancer composite.

Review, 4 female family: sub-branches reveal.  As  written,  the 4-o branch is uncommon but should you remember Fred Hooper’s bred, Olympia USA) 1946aka American Pharoah pows a ‘Grand Slam’, American Pharoah genetics; Helmet’s german maternal heritage also heralds back to KATE (GB) 1849, descendant to a HIGHFLYER MARE. A very important point (if you figure).

  • Eastern Joy b. 2006 dam of Thunder Snow, female family 4-k, from ALICE HAWTHORN 1838, huge Australian staying family.
  • Sadlers Wells, Montjeu, Val-de-Loir (FR), Lorenzzaccio (GB) are the echoes, family 5-h (as discussed)
  • Princequillo all time super-matic breeding infusion. Princequillo lines , descending directly into the tail female are Impossible to be without.

Bonus sire lines: Forli, Court Martial, Caro

Winx’s phenomena

Alamahoud, genotype, Mother Goose, Pocahontas, strains, Thoroughbreds, Winx

A year ago The Thoroughbred Link (TBL) blogged the post below on wonder mare and now super legend Winx. When a pedigree Winx Superior Thoroughbred

TBL made reference to her  genetic phenomena, a likened to Sunline, Phar Lap, Secretariat. And, yes Carbine expresses it to.

TBL feels certain that there is a distinct possibility of the large-heart gene factor also transmitted (to Winx) due to a compacted order and synthesis of two strains – that of strains family 2 & 3.

TBL noticed a similar pattern working at hidden-depths of the above.

The maternal tap-root line of those superior individuals at 9th remove reveals compacting lines which ‘fuse’ and re-ignite when 1 or more of strains are nicked, as occurring  through the stallion.

The prime index factor is undoubtedly Alamahoud, ancestress Mother Goose & 2-d strain; the dam line producing Machiavllian (USA) , Northern Dancer and Halo (USA), read as 6sx6sx9Dx6d.

Mother Goose

Mother Goose

Further more, the 2-d strain (differing but same seed) through Hurry on 9Dx9D.

TBL observed Sunline’s maternal tap-root merged on 2-d strains through sires Hurry On (GB) & Nothing Venture (GB) and the 2 inbred strains of Polymelus 3-e, sire of great racemare Cinna, co-relationship John O’ Gaunt 3-e and also Colorado 3-l.

Secretariat (2-s) and many cohesive  2 strains (again, maternal tap root) particularly through the 2-o strain an those of 3-e (Polymeus) and 3-i via Galopin and Brown Prince.

Phar Lap (2-r) where the family strain branched from 2-n, also compacted upon same. The 3 strain is pointedly via Flying Dutchman 3-i and global ancestress matriarch Pocahontas 3-m.

Winx –  referencing 2-D strains of Almahound, the resemblance (as family strains) emerges through 4th maternal dam, Vegas Street (NZ) to her siring strains those of Sovereign Path via Bobsleigh(GB)  3-l and Winalot (GB) 3-i AND 9th dam, Silverado (GB) 3-i & Nassau (GB) 3-l.

As TBL has ‘championed’ through other articles, it is not the individuals, but what they carry within as determination. see Smokin’ over a pedigree…

We are not talking horse a, horse b, horse c as separate or individual influences. We are looking for the firm genetic ties to accumulate upon ‘truer’ family blood at origination-point.

Winx’s sire – Street Cry’s broodmare sire Troy carries the particular strain 3-i. The broodmare carries a strain of 3-e (Palestine GB) .

And of course through Street Cry there is Nashua 3-m ….relating to the foundational  Byerley Turk.

turkmen-3

ancestry & inheritance always ‘returns’
