A short while ago, a $A1.5 million yearling sales result came through and cheering the achievement of vendor and purchaser it was a fantastic result for all concerned.

Uncovering the pedigree, examining the tail-female line, it was one of m’ Dad’s favourites AND his point of discussion at breeding towards genuine lines/genuine families.

Though Dad was a reputable breeder of stud Friesian cows, 40 years +. And, with the few thoroughbreds to play around with, he was perfectionist at heart: the familial breeding technique where his MAJOR BIG thing was endlessly screening for ‘purity’ – is it ‘direct’, near as possible to the ‘root’ at origin?

Understandably the reader may wonder what his experiences & dairying cows has to do with thoroughbreds but just, hang-in there……The TBL blog is about where/why/how breeding dynamics is a natural thing, contained within the artificial/domestic/business environment.

Dad was a diligent bastard. There he was without technology – reading 1000 times over ‘good’ history quality breeding books & other. He would go over and over diagrams, snippets of  information, read-between-lines, deduce and came upon ‘why’ the 13 family was not only Good, but THE – One.

He came out with the proverbial ancestral,  at to reinforcing, where ‘ALL’ goes back…. to Rachel, Highflyer, Regulus.

Like the ol’ boy, many theories come n’ gone, fade, forgotten. Its the yarning over the back-fence where many ‘unscripted’ understandings towards breeding ‘right’ for the sake of the superior animal and its bred-purpose and performance.

And, awkwardly the sort of stuff which the old Harry’s shall keep to themselves & store away; the observing eye, to develop an astute understanding towards animals & Nature.Existence. Survival. And, onwards strength as species.

Some years ago, when the thoroughbred Link blog was created, a Uruguay bloodstock analyst contacted TBL and interestingly, he also raised the undying Regulus strain. An ancestral strain to salute the pedigree…..

Whilst tricky to ‘know’ definitively what individuals ‘host’ the (R) strain where certain lines spike pedigree… the clues are enough through family-lines. It is to follow the trail….http://thethoroughbredlink.com/2017/11/01/breeding-dynamics-put-the-helmet-on/

One must comprehend & deeply that the thoroughbred is still hybrid – has composite bloodlines ( a mix).

To my mind, there are definitely numerous ‘family’ bands, which appear to stay truer, stronger to themselves. TBL thinks of these as the ‘top’ tier in the thoroughbred population.

However as it goes, amongst any breeding of bloodlines, if there is a selection, to an inappropriate mating-sire, which then becomes broodmare sire and that which inappropriately shall merge incorrectly (to the cycle/passage of breeding), I, TBL ‘O’pinionize and say yes, this is a horse…but will it race(?) and I shall say ‘ just very averagely.’ It will not be a superior performer. ( if my memory serves me right…Sir Patrick Hogan said something like where breeding-is-not-racing, racing-is-not-breeding.) Thoroughbred Breeding: A MASTER OF TIME

Often, Dad would take me out to the paddock and say “what a magnficient striking animal …(muscle and large bone) but for breeding he is a disaster down the track. You’ll get into trouble with the likes of these.”

And more recently, I head a lady commenting on tour, that the mares have gotten too big, too much bone. I mostly agreed but had to walk away and think, reverting to dad’s farming alchemy and animal management with my own past stud-stock experiences where chewing-the-gum upon todays racing & working through … where is-the-breed-going….?

To breed ‘perfection’ is not to only aim at genetics but the best optimal phenotype, & constitution, the ‘gait’ and its flexibility or elasticity to move ably, fleet-footed. Multi-faceted criteria’s which must take heavy consideration into a scheme of what-is-racehorse ideal. Yet furthering to that examination – 1) 2 year old speed-machines or 2) stayer shall mean sharp energetic distinction from the pure anaerobic to aerobic.

Such has been the improvement in the anaerobic capacity to todays thoroughbred and the total absence of aerobic improvement or it may even be decline of aerobic performance. These change of the last 30 years must be appreciated in any scientific study of todays thoroughbred. Because the thoroughbred has changed, the training and breeding management may no longer be applicable. The anaerobic horse is better, but as a consequence more physiologically fragile.

High Chaparral, Melbourne Cup 2017, Rekindling

Came too late, for TBL to change his pick as horses paraded for the 2017 Melbourne cup won by Rekindling (GB), a 3 year colt, by High Chaparral out of Sitara.

Yes people… as commentary put its camera on the youngster, TBL just kind-of-knew Rekindling had ‘that-look’: an attention-grabbing, racehorse.

That’s the different look….type, bone mass, structure, vigour… essentially an economical type for high-demanding athletic performance. Something we saw in Mongolian Khan, the motion. It was like Ten thousand Diamonds: Mongolian Khan

Ever since revising horses and pedigrees (at earliest) expanding thru to breeding & larger generation periods inside breeding/racing culture; as to observe the natural evolvement of where body type (in general) takes an evolutionary course over time. Primarily, on reflection it is the phrasing, rephrasing or fixing/refixing inwardly of the breed.

The tallish, angular, swift prototype maybe, just maybe, possibly bettered by economical: not small but compact, efficient and well balanced (scale) to produce ‘n’ th energy, tempo, rhythm, equine aptitude – all diverse factors which compel a horse to relax over distant at high-stress performance.

The ‘transition’ of an ability-to-relax and win, is more than experience/schooling/training and breeding. Its within….

It is a peculiar natural faculty of survival, under duress – a horses spine to drop/lengthen/‘extend’ & relax to conserve energy, as to make more momentum – to outrun opposition,  spontaneously escape predators.

Its thinking outside the circle….TBL respects this guru (on equine physics) http://www.scienceofmotion.com/chazot_thoughts.html. Much to think on changing.

Genotype: The Rekindled tabulated pedigree says it all again. TBL posits that the domineering female family factor which is the thoroughbred elite 5-H. (the great Sadlers Wells, Topside (USA) Lorenzaccio (GB) – hail from ancestress Simons Shoes/Goody Two Shoes .Get more insight here….Breeding Dynamics: Put the HELMET on  .

More on tabulated pedigrees Thoroughbred Breeding: A MASTER OF TIME

Just how family dynastic influential IS this family line 5-h?

Is it the ‘force-of-nature’ ? – the complex factor necessary to champions. It beckons exceptionally crafty: pick ‘em…spot ‘em…spot it.

folks….that’s the verve – priceless

Man O' War, Thoroughbreds

IMG_0523

TBL frequently reminisces ol’ tough but oh so, beautiful brutes of yesteryear.

Vintage photos which capture the physical magic presence of power, strength of ‘truth’ and the true equine being with his majestic sense of the ineffable.

The great Man O’ War was something else… out on his own. A $5000.00 yearling

already regal, strong bone, deep girth, strong neck, strong rump

a purchase by a guy called Sam Riddle – he went 21 races at 2 & 3 years old (20 won), with one 2nd placing.

A strictly private at-home stallion he met too short of average mares to produce hall-mark progeny – War Admiral, War Relic, Battleship, American Flag & more… all his history compounds together as No. 1 Horse of the Century.

MOW was pure, pure bull. Pure, pure & pure. Purity in the strictest sense…purity in origin, purity in essence. A primordial beast of the finest.

Breeding with pure bull is based long-term strength with recipe of superiority. The weak become strong: the average become champion.

So very simple Frank, but how do ya’ tell new lines astutely…

Superior traits, superior genes are exclusive lines and not always ever direct inclusive,  so it seems.

Tricky…very tricky. deano

Depth, in the strictest sense, needs to be conveyed or ‘seized’ by both phenotype and genotype where the infusion ‘mastery’ as such is geared upon the 5th remove of pedigree. (unfortunately many pedigree enthusiasts just May…view pedigrees as ‘fixed’ as one gazes upon a linear model per program. No! you sense…think the lines working, flushing, infusing, knitting, merging working upon the impression you find).

The distinct principle wants to have purpose on a long deep cross and not merely, match-making model for benefit on commercial, investment, financial by ‘numbers’ game that race-horses are manufactured bred for a loosened gambling industry (& its investment) which doesn’t know too much accountability really.

      – mate, we’re thinkin’ we’re such long ways from Man o’ War but … doesn’t it work mighty interestin’ where superior pedigrees take a good few dosage’s from Man o’ War when he merely sired/bred to approx. 25 mares per year.

What springs at TBL…is that beautiful thingy…about zenith superiority ‘worms’ its way through successfully, & takes, & naturally so, the top-tier into exclusivity.

TBL has always considered the superior are componentry of purity: of female-maternal, of bloodline essence, which conduits or transmits the primal order where an originating founder re-mem-bers itself, as source.

This factor is sourcing the best, for the best; a task turning over many a countless pedigree gathering its merits of what potential is to appear, where it needs to appear.

Before you head outdoors to the sales , just Bulls-eye… the ‘detail’ of Man o’ War…..COMPARE – WORK N’ THINK.

Doesn’t this, give breeding/selecting an idea, an inspiration, a target. Can the exceptional MOW genetic landscape twist itself again and again? Seems it can.

Yes, what remains is that ineffable factor, that treasure, that earnest love for a super good horse and where, somewhere in its genetic heritage it returns the love of a desert spirit.

 always seek, always pursue….

nyme31478829496 the best.
