Zabeel

Zabeel – taken a month before his passing. (photo by TBL)

∞Zabeel: Sire of 46 G.1 winners…it is indeed exhausting to go into his far-reaching achievements: hail the great Zabeel, as conduit breeder and Australasian sire of sires.

img-4724-011208920830.jpeg

Long years back, through a breeding forum, TBL commented to Zabeel’s impact of his female breeding to the double dosage – French sire Sunny Boy (Jock – Fille de Soleil ex- Solario) as assigned, ff 16-a.

The vital ‘yesteryear’ breeding that brings forth, many a quality pedigree.

…how favorable it is: when double maternal infusion (via sire) to the generations going forward, paves the gold.

While opinions today favour high-quality sires – to only maintain the ‘might’ of sire attributes, it follows where familial breeding principle complements and indicates a robust individual. The genetic parcel is firmly packed and ready to open.

It is saying of a Stallion: He, is the SON of his Dam – Zabeel’s sire, Sir Tristram via the regal Selene line, TBL prior discussed and reinforced her through Catalyst – the shimmer of SELENE to the deeper Conduit, of essential Difference – Part one

The sire line Sir Tristram – Sir Ivor – Sir Gaylord – Turn To – Royal Charger to Solario tags many a superior pedigree and notably where Habitat (Sir Gaylord) also forcibly stamps.

– Interestingly Habitat’s dam line through 3rd dam grand-sire Swynford (from Canterbury Pilgrim) Pilgrimmage by The Palmer (f.f. 5-i). Once again, genotype, prototype has its strains defining …. Conduit, of essential Difference – Part one

“With the death of Europe’s finest stallion, Habitat and pensioning off from stud duties the North American wonder, Northern Dancer, New Zealand may now make claim to having the world’s best living, active thoroughbred stallion” Tony Arrold credit reference Give a Man A Horse – by Dianne Haworth

Whilst on Habitat, his broodmare sire Occupy, 2nd dam sire North Star and hello folks, here we are again – North Stars’s sire Sunstar sired by SUNDRIDGE.

Factoring Sundridge traits is phenomenal and TBL painstakingly cites over n’ over…that it ALL WORKS above speed, stamina towards a prototype of horse: the prototype combination of genotype/phenotype which delivers the extraordinaire.

“Champion horses invariably look similar in conformation” – Bart Cummings

Master the prototype by reading Conduits.

Zabeel’s dam Lady Giselle, her 3rd dam by the great DERNA by Sunny Boy. His dam Fille de Soleil → Solario → SUNDRIDGE. The broodmare sire Sansovina (Sywnford etc.) he from the same female family 6-e, as belonging to Selene/Gondolette

Zabeel’s broodmare sire – Nureyev note 2x Hyperion/Selene which impacts so strongly to the very special elite dam, Special: Sadlers Wells. (n.b. Special…. keys to upcoming, exciting sire Tarzino (NZ) which TBL shall explore further & update Back to the Future with Tarzino (NZ)

However, moving on 2020…..the conduit impact. Take note when as broodmare sire the New Zealand’s Waikato stud sire Ocean Park (Thorn Park – ) 4 year old gelding, Kolding (NZ) a G1 winner Epsom Handicap 1600m and the mare Tofane, a G.3 winner.

And Catalyst (as above) at the Oaks stud, Darci Brahma (ex-Grand Echezeaux (Zabeel).

Chase along mares by Lonhro (Octagonal/Zabeel – Shadea same maternal as Catalyst) spinning those conduit factors – 64% winners to runners as broodmare sire.

Raising a glass to the future, there will be many more generations & Zabeel influences to appreciate and admire upon the New Zealand and Australian bloodstock industry.

“he’s plain, laid-back and rather small” – commentary to New Zealand’s truly exciting freakish 3 year old gelding.

Catalyst, by Darci Brahma from Evana by Entrepeneur (GB) proves winning comes easy at the G.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas. (6 starts, 5 wins)

Our first Conduits series, to explore genetic giants, its depths, and why/what keeps superior genotype charging. I think many scratch the heads (wink) however this a sighted prototype, we continue to notice and remark to…. and its shining right through Catalyst.

The most important factor we’ve been long seeking into analysis-to-breeding the desired, & via specific traits (i.e. where does it come from....) to the ‘ease’, ‘fluidity’ , bio-mechanical efficiency to the phenotype racing gait. We say…it is what ‘cuts’ the difference between ‘levels’ of a good horse to a competitive racehorse.

  • Below – an eloquent description, where breeding-history writes detail we seek, how the nature of phenotype is examined. (sidenote: intriguing the dynamics, to breeding regimes has not really changed)

A horse’s momentum, depends upon his pedal members, properly adjusted by muscles and leverage, true and frictionless. His capacity to live in a long, hard struggle depends upon his heart and lungs; exertion accelerate the heart’s action and the lungs must be equal to the emergency, or the animal chokes up. This organization is hereditary. The Horse-Breeders Handbook, Joseph Osbourne 1881

img_20190623_151709-012058296159.jpeg

Generally a useful ‘screening’ selection to a stallion is the broodmare sire, as ‘throw’: the strains which take significant contribution to the next generation ‘breeding’.

To subject horse: Catalyst…..broodmare sire Zabeel by Sir Tristram from the female family 6-e (Selene, note also her son Pharamond), Zabeel has 5x’s to her.

Evana, by sire Entrepeneur (GB) – his dam, female family 6-e, SELENE. AS mentioned above broodmare sire,  take strains which ‘fire’ significant contribution.

Look back….what did highlight the SELENE line to such, blue-blood prominence.

https://www.pedigreequery.com/catalyst.

Below the diagram to find co-affinity ‘remembers’, the in-breeding pedigree via The Palmer and full brother Rosicrucian via female family 5-i, ancestress Diversion.

img_20190925_142943-01111284413.jpeg

Catalyst’s sire, Darci Brahma (Danehill)

Danehill → Buckpasser (n.b. paternal grandsire, Pharamond from SELENE ) by Tom Fool → grand-dam sire Equipoise (f.f. 5-j, ancestress DIVERSION), 3rd dam sire Sun Briar by SUNDRIDGE. Tom Fool’s dam Busanda by War Admiral → Man O War from dam Mahubah from Rock Sand by Sainfoin, from Sanda. Blue Larkspur → maternal grand-sire Sunstar (f.f. 5-i)  by SUNDRIDGE.

Zabeel/Sir Tristram, My Babu by Djebel from dam Loika (f.f. 5-j) ancestress DIVERSION

https://www.pedigreequery.com/entrepreneur2

Entrepereneur (GB) by Sadlers Wells (Northern Dancer  note & highlight Selene factoring i.e. Hyperion & Sickle, paternal grandsire of Polynesian). S.W’s dam Fairy Bridge by Bold Reason from Lalun →Djeddah/Djebal from Loika (f.f. 5-j) ancestress Diversion

Exclusive Native → Shut Out , by Equipoise (f.f. 5-j) ancestress Diversion

2x’s @ Turn-To, by Royal Charger from Sun Princess/Mumtaz Begum (by Solario maternal sire by SUNDRIDGE) → Lady Josephine by SUNDRIDGE

Now maybe its more clear what strikes genotype.

Of same maternal family roots Gay Poss/My Tricia female family 8, notice the co-affinity.

  • Lonhro (Octagonal – Shadea) i.e. Zabeel/family 9-c/ Straight Strike→Lalun/Djebal etc
  • Grosvenor (Sir Tristram – My Tricia) i.e. Hyperion/Selene/ 2 X’s Solario

P.S If any reader has information to the breeding direct to Selene family, please let me know. Cheers.

Conduit, of essential Difference (Part 3)

Conduits, Deep Impact, Halo, Hyperion, Selene, Sunday Silence, Sundridge, Sunstar

∗It will come as little surprise, we’re identifying Sunday Silence/Halo as conduit(s).

Their breeding effects, particularly to Japan’s breeding stock, how they have reaped & sowed genetic opportunity, on-wards to another called Deep Impact and also their broodmare sire extraordinaire.

& then Strength & Courage, left Magic all alone….

Here…I won’t re-visit their breeding to racing media-journalism but rather, driving at genetic breeding through a different prism, which is based to genetic ‘trait’ profiling.

– why they (Halo, Sunday Silence) are placed to a top of the pyramid.  Where Is, the gene, in the genetic bottle?

Genomics might want to ‘own’ / ‘claim’ it, such a sacred gene & such a discovery, is to cash in.

(side note commentary: genomics….. from experience to farming stock/ livestock breeding how breeding values (beef, dairy) went evaluated upon high-producing yields in lesser amount of days (young maturity) those generations thereof, dwindled, to weak and small.
Those ‘isolated’ breeding-values, kissed goodbye an ‘across’ diversity. A home-breeder knows his trade to individual maternal lines; peculiar robust traits which have them naturally, strong, individuals. The breeding… bred onwards, and passed to their progeny.)

Does any of this sound familiar, to you?

Whilst many appraise racehorse pedigrees, the matter-of-fact analysis, of ‘naming’ to family relationship with an authenticity from either ancestral or collective dosages; the warranting of pedigree, verified by algorithms to correct nicking patterns….has methods  many, to its interpretation.

The distinguishing ‘wow’ factor is ‘what’ strikes progenitor dominance which will over-ride all and ‘how’ it is expressing itself upon progeny.

The ‘progeny’ is not just to be like his ‘daddy’: but going above the sire, going above the mare (termed ‘upgrading’) – to the bred, aptitude of ultimate expression. I have applied aptitude of ultimate expression, a dynamic which Transcends, the primordial calling, DNA.

Let it not be forgotten, the complexities to hybrid-breeding are far-reaching, and utopia keeps entertaining of what has the ideal.

The racing-terrain today, has (as I have prior expressed) an extreme demanding, to unforgiving paradigm: mature early, run early, high-cruise, stay, sprint, enduring the punishing attachment to precocious athleticism.

So backtrack the idea to pedigrees….let’s suppose, our expected ideologies to pedigree are stuck: the rips and rising tides, the shifts and changes of genetic furnaces going under, to surface elsewhere.

Awkwardly, little is acknowledged to the mechanics: (energetically) bio-mechanical ACTION, the horses ‘natural’ demeanor for the job ‘we’ demand it to. And… something only a rider shall experience, ‘how it feels…’. Fluidity is akin to the tai-chi master.

And it is here, the perfect arrangement of genotype to phenotype, goes to tiny detail – the gait, the balance, the ease of a panther on the hunt.

TBL has been at great pains to ‘push’; ‘express’ genotype & express the phenotype – to a ultimate type for such extraordinary ability we want. And…frankly, if the breeder is not accepting such a logical responsibility, what is he doing carries only a numbers breeding exercise.

Sunday Silence/Halo – breeding ‘representatives’: carriers of-the finest. How/why-so???

Halo, inbred/linebred to Blue Larkspur as linebred through the family-maternal via Padua ( she an ancestress of B.L>Black Servant, Raise a Native, Relic. )

This is the obvious: now to the not obvious….. (note, to deeply comprehend, these genetic ‘Runnings’ you shall need to prior read/explore Conduits

  1. Halo by Hail to Reason by Turn-To by Royal Charger (ff 9c) from Sun Princess by Solario (ff. 26) his dam’s sire Sundridge. Sun Princess → Mumtaz Begum → Lady Jospehine by Sundridge.
  2.  Admiral Drake → Craig an Eran → Sunstar by Sundridge from Sierra from Sanda
  3.  Phalaris from Bromus by Sainfoin, his dam Sanda
  4.  Blue Larkspur, dam’s sire Northstar by Sunstar by Sundridge
  5.  Man O’ War from Mahubah by Rock Sand by Sainfoin
  6.  Cosmic Bomb – Pharamond/Phalaris from Bromus by Sainfoin (further note Pharamond dam the Selene/Gondolette female family 6-e, in-bred by Madame Eglentine through her siring sons, Rosicrucian & The Palmer, to female family 5-i.
  7.  Over There from Summer Girl by Sundridge
  8.  The grand-dam Almahmoud,  by Mahmoud, the dam-line, to Lady Jospehine, by Sundridge

To: Sunday Silence from dam Wishing Well by Understanding – distinguish the following:

  1.  Understanding/Promised Land to Mahmoud i.e. Sundridge
  2.  Promised Land to 3rd dam by Tetratema to broodmare sire, Symington, the grand dam by The Palmer (f.f. 5-i)
  3. Understanding – the broodmare sire Stymie, to grand-sire Equipoise (the f.f. 5j) links back, to Diversion, same ancestress to female family 5-i
  4.  Man O War 3x (as per above)
  5.  grand-dams sire Montparnasse to Hyperion from Selene (f.f. 6e) inbred to female family 5-i, ancestress Diversion
  6.  Khaled/Hyperion from Selene
  7.  Wishing Well, the elite Cinna line, her grand dam Baroness La Fleche → Rosicrucian (f.f. 5-i)

Halo/Sunday Silence/ Deep Impact from Wind In Her Hair

  1. 4th maternal-dam, by Hyperion from Selene et al.
  2.  4th dam maternal, maternal sire Hyperion
  3.  6 strains, total to Selene, of the f.f. 6e i.e. Serenissma/Gondolette strain/traits/infusion
  4.  the sire Alzao / Court Martial by Fair Trial by Phalaris. Fair Trial from Lady Juror from Lady Josephine by Sundridge. Fair Trial (4x’s).
  5.  sire, Alzao to Sir Ivor to Turn To ( Royal Charger/Solario/Craig an Eran ) et al

These subtle/discreet patterns are luminary.

Draw your attention to one, Northern Dancer – find the trait, find the harmony.

  1. Nearctic’s 4th sire – Phalaris (Sainfoin, dam Sanda)
  2.  Broodmare sire – Hyperion from, Selene
  3.  dam’s sire – Native Dancer by Polynesian → Sickle from Selene
  4.                                                                           Dam Blue-grass → Rock Sand (by Sainfoin)
  5.  Polymelian, dam by Sundridge
  6.  Mahmoud, the dam-line to Lady Josephine by Sundridge.

For Australasian TBL readers “there was once upon a time, an ugly duckling, which nobody wanted, so in the end, he got sold for a measly sum.” He was the 1982-1983 Australia Horse of the Year. His name Gurner’s Lane.

Gurner’s Lane genotype went through Sir Tristram (Selene), Sabaean from Selene (i.e. f.f. 6e) to his dam Taiona, to 5th dam Hauteur (sire line Tracery/Rock Sand) → Absurb by Sundridge. To further note – Hauteur’s sire, Demosthenes (f.f. 5i) from dam, Carlen → ancestress Diversion.

Another Australasian racing great, the mighty Might and Power (Zabeel) features genotype to Her Most Serene Highness, Selene. But why oh why, do I not see the Selene bottom-line factoring in todays modern pedigrees? Has ‘she’ all but disappeared – perhaps you can help me there!?

Zabeel (Sir Tristram) will be our next Conduit subject!! (stay tuned)

img_5585-2_large_hd.original

Staphanos (JPN) by Deep Impact, grand-daddy Halo. Halo, was known for a shark-eye – it was the way he would look at you…

IMG_5539

an eye for a Halo eye…the sire Bullbars, whose broodmare sire is Singspiel, whose dam sire is Halo.
