On the recent NZ stallion tour, I was mindful to the Studmasters commentary, where addressing the challenge to breeding for market; to their observations of how tradition once held to the stamina type, has undergone its progressive change & alongside demand for early speed.

Objectives of genuine breeding meet greater ineffability of breeding and I feel for sure those challenges, how they always follow through, engages a terrific foresight.

As such, for a long brow-beating period, TBL has pondered the subtle & exceptional influences within & of, the high performance individual.

The ‘devil is in the detail’.…. and I shall opinion, it is a pivotal strain which ‘fulfills’ breed shaping criteria.

Step aside from in-breeding, or to that of line-bred individuals; the consideration is to seek the essential conduit of superior difference(s) and aim towards what must be the superior, complete phenotype factor. i.e. dual purpose.

The conduit, what may induce the correct type of consistency: stamping individuals great turn-of-foot, propulsion, to be best from best and win. Better said: the bio-mechanical capability and efficiency.

The task to breeding is to catalyze true conduit factors to induce the finest possible specimen.

To appreciate the general principle – research these pedigrees below and view the breeding trait – what brings the ‘life’ to bloodline.

What made Ribot. (e.g. dam inbred to Sunstar f.f. 5i, via Sundridge)

Hyperion. (dam inbred to Pilgramage by The Palmer f.f. 5i)

img_20190925_142943-01111284413.jpeg

Thus, its not duplicating the pedigree: its revealing it.

The thinking exercise ….the ancestral trait/influence ON the pedigree and what contributing traits support the proposed quality bred, prototype.

The method, is to refine pedigree…..

Why?

Because over a sturdy study to TB heritages and the evolutionary cycles; the invisible spectrum’s of breeding, to those deep depths, finds, purest genus is the one lasting prototype.

Cryptic as it is, that is the key.

Our remarkable blog Winx came from Herod asserted the Herod prototype. Researchers take similar view: archetypal Herod is King.

We may ask: where are those factors today, what may again transmit the distinguished class?

Ancestry-on-repeat and always, always, genetics mitDNA to reflect again ‘why’ evolutionary ‘roots’: the ancestral attributed Family 5 – the Belvoir strain – uniquely labelled ‘special’. Kingdoms & war-horses, horse- breeding, Christianity, European feudalism, knights & territories. …the evolution of the Thoroughbred, probably by the inter-breeding Buckingham’s Spanish imports with the pre-existing Rutland bred hobby horses & Galloways.

Through the ages…it all equates to a key principle; a horse is genuine, bred ‘fit’ to its type (of kind) duty, as also goes the modern equivalent i.e. to race and win like a champion.

As conventional ‘methods’ apply in-breeding, line-breeding and RF to most breeders modis operandi, those helpful determinations are not always to bearing the finest.

Many usual patterns through pedigrees (i.e. Sadlers Wells, Mr Prospector, Danehill etc) come almost rather ‘close’ to a varied similarity. And though the data of popular successful nicks to those siring sons has its record – it is historical inclined, without yet aiding, how latency is still ‘gold’.

Sourcing influences as transmitting ideal traits to pedigree, via the individual what ‘gave’ – we shall conclude: right conduit trait will ‘sharpen’ and underpin the breeding be it through maternal or paternal.

it does little good to go through a litany of linebreeding crosses if we cannot learn how to exploit the newly gained knowledge in the future. Les Brinsfield The Pedigree Post

As ‘said’, the purpose follows – an early and high performing/enduring individual bred bred fit to its pressured ‘sport’ development & of demands to commercial sector, has really commanded an extreme demanding charter upon the thoroughbred horse.

Such charter….ultimately shapes/uptakes a specific biological geno/phenotype character: precocious capacity to sprint and stay (at pace) to sprint and burst with complete domination.

“keep things simple and we will see that there is no way of measuring a certain distance and which speed ends and staying power begins. It would be like trying to determine where cold ends and heat begins. It is all relative”. Speed and Staying Power, Federico Tesio – Breeding the Racehorse.

First-up, to our exclusive profile series to come…Exceptional Conduits

The first subject ‘horse’: the late Sir Henry Cecil described him as one of the great mile horses of the century – genuine and with immense ability.

With a race record of fourteen victories and two seconds from sixteen races, let’s identify Kris/Sharpen Up.

Kris’s sire, Sharpen Up from his lesser reputable US sire Atan (Native Dancer), yet with dam Roccheeta’s breeding, the explosion, to the breeding of juvenile champions to best sons Kris, full brother and champion 2 year old colt Diesis.

stallions can be like grass, they can spring up where there wasn’t any growth before – Charlie Whittingham, Hall of Fame trainer.

Kris sired Irish-bred, Triple crown winning filly Oh So Sharp (Kris x Oh So Fair (USA) and mare, Unite (Kris x Pro Patria) winning Epsom and Irish Oaks.

Find Kris/Sharpen Up to Invincible Spirit (IRE)(Green Desert x Rafha ex-Kris) his shattering record for 2yo winners, to his Australian siring son I am Invincible the no. 1 sire of 2 year olds 2018/19.

High Chaparral (Sadlers Wells x Kasora, grandam sire Kris) – champion 3 year old colt England/Ireland sire of black type winners Contributer, Dundeel, So you Think, Descarado, Shoot out, Toronado, Monoco Consul, Rekindling etc.

Crystal Ocean –  currently ranked world no.1 horse (Sea the Stars x Crystal Star, 3rd dam sire KRIS)

The 3 year old Germany’s Derby winning colt, Laccario by Scalo (GB) from Laccato (GB) –noting Sharpen Up (5×5)

The consistent US performer, Get Stormy (Stormy Atlantic (USA) from Foolish Gal to broodmare sire Kiris Clown, his dam sired by KRIS.

The equivalent conduit to many American bred lines is Hoist the Flag, grandson of Ribot.

Hoist the Flag went described with an exceptional fluid gait – (hints) a bio-mechanical efficiency.

Hoist the Flag- a champion 2 year old colt & highly-noted for leading juvenile sire and broodmare sire. As stallion, he died ‘short’ – at age of 12.

Hoist the Flag influence is worth noting to 2019 Kentucky Derby disqualified winning hero Maximum Security and the lovely world class mare Zenyatta by Street Cry to his sire Machiavellian. And, of course Winx….

The world ranked Australian bred Santa Ana Lane (AUS) by Lope de Vega from Fast Fleet (AUS) noting Machiavellian and the 4th dam sire Hoist the Flag.

History Hall of Fame and All-Time greatness, the undefeated – PERSONAL ENSIGN – (Private Account from, Grecian Banner by Hoist the Flag)

img_20190925_142953-011767100636.jpeg

img_20190925_143024-011179063553.jpeg

TBL conclusion…it is not only in/linebreeding but where to establish ‘right’ conduit inheritance that bite ‘hard’, as possible latent factor, indicated from those superior individuals & as demonstrated through their racing and breeding feats. Their incredible ‘intangible’ phenotype, to what surely has its economical bio-mechanical strength. i.e. phenotyped  correctness.

Kris/Diesis/Sharpen Up, Hoist the Flag truly merits any pedigree well.

And here the latest KRIS influence: look to the close, maternal pedigree, 3rd dam of the very exciting 5 times winning, 2 year old colt Pinatubo (Shamardal x. Lava Flow). Shamardal/broodmare sire Machiavellian (Hoist the Flag)

img_20190925_143038_1-01349675042.jpeg

Kris was the kingpin in Europe over 8 furlongs winning 7 races including the St. Jame’s Palace stakes at Royal Ascot, Sussex Stakes (Goodwood) & the Waterford Crystal Mile & Queen Elizabeth II stakes at Ascot. Evening Times 1980.

Hoist the Flag’s breeding stats, do not tell the full story….

Shiekh Hamdan was the first to buy a share and breed a mare to Diesis and he supported him his entire career. He was (as) aware of his successful brother Kris. – Talkin Horses. (as response appreciating Sharpen Up breeding to world-class runners.)

Painstaking, intelligent, sometimes intuitive choice of a maternal grandsire can lead to the creation of celebrated nicks, where the blending of two sire names leads to the production of a new, superior brand of racing animal. Primacy of the Genes – Ross du Bourg

Genius defies logic….

(post blog update: Desert Encounter (IRE) by Halling (ex-Diesis) from La Chicana (Invincible Spirit) → KRIS. A consistent performer and winner of Canadian International Stakes.

Cheers for now, cropped-nyme31478829496

I heard the expression – ‘pedigree is absolute’.

Yep…few pedigrees read ‘wow’.

You know pedigree, how it ‘vibes’…..how it compels.

And, why so?

Well, at every measure of who’s who, stallions and their dams, it fires both ways, i.e potentiality & stallion merits where the genetic pathways are fuelled.

Yes, of course, it’s as-I-see it. Bloodlines are the ‘patterns’ via The Thoroughbred Link learnings….

We are here to explore the cryptic language of inheritance.Well, as best as one can.

Some pedigrees are solid, some are not. Take extra discernment….bit like looking for  fine-print before you sign: devils through many a detail as they may say.

I can hear some say “well, how can you be assured”?

I shall not guarantee, but the goodies read something like this Black Caviar: ‘diamonds’ within a pedigree or Ten thousand Diamonds: Mongolian Khan or American Pharoah pows a ‘Grand Slam’ & how chrome, turns to Gold: California Chrome. Oh, I can’t forget this wonder…When a pedigree Winx Superior Thoroughbred and our dear Patterns of Nature: Phar Lap & Sunline

You see it is not about one’s own theory, formulation, system or any other that must be ‘set-in-stone’ according to algorithm calculations.

No.

The Thoroughbred Link (About) comes from grasping some of antiquity, the evolutionary history of Thoroughbred, from domestic & selective breeding of horse, the evolutionary growing phases, the climaxes, and cycles where thoroughbreds merge.

Excitingly, that is what pedigree analysis can do.

*

Welcome to The Thoroughbred Link: subject crunching out Azamour (IRE) /Worship (USA) as example and appeal of ‘class’.

Rightly so …you can Worship this maternal, family line. She has produced 1) Tavistock 2) Precedence.

tavistock-14b

Tavistock – from the maternal family Mrs Moss, 14b strain.

The maternal line belongs to the family strain 14b: bloodstock auctioneers however, will inform buyers as the, Mrs Moss line.

Here is a little about Mrs Moss and one of her progeny. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precocious_(horse)

Azamour (IRE) – dear god, how I love the Aga Khan’s breeding footprints. Always, always so exquisitely done, and completed family lines. They are the ‘best’ of the ‘best’ patterns – believe me.

Basically like catching a falling star, you catch a classic European pedigree …. I just can’t say enough of how Azamour/Worship falls to place.

Forget your ideas about in-breeding, out-crossing because the noveau rich inheritance is actually quite close and heightens where maternal-factoring needs to go. It is a rare-thing, because in this case it is all about ‘timing’ and ‘breeding’. It’s thanks, to superior past breeding.

If you find this a little ra-ra-ra, americana…..that’s okay. It is backed up by a hypothesis I have, which I have hinted at before, the nature of transposing genes.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Transposition+(genetics)

I actually think of Azamour’s pedigree has almost another Nearco, or Ribot class to it. Distinctive pointers.

However, Azamour’s career was tragically cut short.

Firstly, lean your eyes on where Ribot is falling upon the maternal bottom xx (Azamour dam’s line) as kick-butt gene.

Azamour’s sire, Nightshift (USA) aka the family 4g strain….think Encosta de Lago, Holy roman Emperor, the sire of Mongolian Khan, Charm Spirit.

Azamour’s broodmare sire, Lear Fan (USA), not aware of this blood around in New Zealand) but it’s clear that dynastic giant inheritor War Admiral/Man O’ War integrates and that is what you really want to blend in.

Now we shall really crack the hard-shell… where I have prior emphasized through Smokin’ over a pedigree… and Strains & maternal families as grand-dam, across grand-dam catalyse the pedigree to the newer family, rather than merely imitate.

Thus Lear Fan across High Line is where, what, how as ‘nick’ conductor.

Follow the family strain peculiar to Selene (6e)& Alacantara (4i)

Swing it further across greater dam’s.

Lear Fan across Worship, Mrs Moss dams sire Reform 5-h strain. They say hello…. they want to remember the genome sequence.

It is not unalike to Tavistock/Zabeel ‘nicks’ upon the 5-h strain connection….threads back to Simon Shoes ancestress.

In blogging weeks ahead, the 5h strain is clearly a topic to delve into: its prominence and defining enigmatic trait.

It will be fascinating to see how Azamour checks out for you.

Contact me is you wish. You also might find this handy TBL analysis for superior-bred

Good luck!fun

“ it is the rarity and the wonders of genetic inheritance which give breeders & breeding so much passion; to with the pleasures of racing ‘fine’ horses & who are able to go to successful stud duty thereafter.” JSB

Black Caviar: ‘diamonds’ within a pedigree

1-P, Black Caviar, Court Martial, Dundeel Nearco, Franco Varola, genetic families, Hornbeam, Hyperion, Lunchtime, Nasrullah, Right Royal, Selene, Snippets, Sunline, typology of the Racehorse

An equine immortal, I often think of Black Caviar as a beautiful intelligent design – the true representative of her species in looks, size and abilities.
Black Caviar’s tap-root family belongs to 1-p. It, a founding family for Lord Astor of Astor studs (U.K.)
The underlying significance of the 1-P family branch was for some time perplexing until it was reasoned that her ancestral predecessor contributor came from King Tom (3m) a son of that blue-hen supreme, Pocahontas: a jumping gene cross-over established in the genetic mix and so enormously potent as transference to the strain.
Curiously the significant 1-P strain also echoes in Sunline’s maternal pedigree through Winkie, best known for being the dam-sire of the unforgettable Phar Lap. Winkie was a reasonably successful stallion with winners at all distances. The best Pilliewinkie (1919), a winner in New Zealand of the CJC Metrpolitan Handicap and Dunedin Cup, and in Australia of the 18 furlong Australian Cup, the VRC King’s Plate (16 furlongs), the 10 furlong Essendon Stakes, and other good races. Winkie is brother to One Thousand Guineas winner Winkipop.
The magnificent NZ sire O’Reilly (now deceased) where his maternal sire is that of Pompeii Court (USA) 1-P. Pompeii Court loved the mile distance. One of his victories (1982 Longacres mile) was a track-setting record.

*** 1-P strain, as a breeding value is overwhelmingly significant in the modern thoroughbred.

Pedigree aficionados may jump and down how, King Tom/Pocahontas (the DNA) is far too remote. Yet the point I wish to share is – these are primordial genes extraordinaire, carriers of quantum amassed energy.

Upon society’s progress, we come with the difficulty scenario, where racing/stud names of thoroughbred distract the ‘blood’ relationships of strains, where strains actually co-exist to co-jointly accentuate a genetic familiarity.
If ever an old pedigree wheel had been retained which as below, a ‘fan’ arrangement: how families folded into each other, the intricacies of families, as ‘strains’ would be far more appreciated.

pedwheel

Simply, by disregarding the recti-linear approach & to largely assess upon multi-dimensional layers as accumulated in Black Caviar’s genetic make-up, provides a freshened genetic landscape to ponder.
The main strains move into view & of prime consideration are 1-P, 9-C & 9 branches, 6-e & 6 branches and all 3 branches to those timeless individuals so named. Collectively, Black Caviar progressed from these ancestral prototypes.
Court Martial 1-p (5s x 6d). His sire, Fair Trial coming from a 9-c female line through Lady Juror.
John Hislop in his book Breeding for Racing describes Court Martial as “A beautiful horse of superb quality, truly made, sound and possessed of excellent limb. Though having a measure of stamina, speed was Court Martial’s forte, which is reflected in his stock.

1-P also through Hornbeam at 6th remove. He, the great grand-dam sire of Lunchtime, the sire of Snippets. Hornbeam was a son of Hyperion (6-e) and his maternal sire Nasrullah (9-c). Hornbeam was 1st Great Voltigeur Stk, 2nd St Leger, At stud in England then sent to Sweden. Hornbeam, the sire of St. Leger winner Intermezzo.
With impact, the complete representation of core-nucleus strains takes a representation by individuals within their collective families.
The 9-C strain at 6th remove, where Nasrullah via grand-dam Mumtaz Begum & her grandson Kurdistan, Migoli via his grand-dam, Mah Mahal, Tudor Minstrel via dam Sansonnet, Fair Trial via Lady Juror, Mahmoud are interlocking keys of genetic families.
Also of major importance is the 6-e strain, tracing back to Gondolette through Selene, dam of Hyperion and Pharamoud .
Myrobella (6-e) also traces through to Gondolette.
Silly Season (5d x 5d) sired by Tom Fool 3-j, an influential horse & sire (Buckpasser & Tim-Tam) but sadly not really highly optimized for his true breeding worth even with his highly notable race-track successes.

Yet here we are today, Tom Fool always appears in best, well-bred pedigrees. He was & is a key-maker.
n.b. (checkout Ouija Board (by Cape Cross) GB m. 2001, notice maternal family is highlighted by Silly Season & Court Martial). Boom!

Other sub-branches of the 3, 9 & 6 female families both contribute genetic ‘structure’ because they are core foundational relationships. Constructively at 7th remove upon the tail-female line, Right Royal 3-f, a French sire of inestimable strength but thought limited, as a stallion. He was the best two-year-old in France in 1960 and his wins included the Grand Criterium. He was the dominant three-year-old of his generation in Europe in the spring and summer of 1961, winning the Poule d’Essai des Poulains, Prix du Jockey Club and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Interestingly, Right Royal profiles in the same zone of pedigree for Dundeel – the New Zealand/Australian multiple G.1 winner and when Dundeel ran his final 400 metres of the Australian Derby, did so faster than Black Caviar in the 1200-metre T.J. Smith Stakes the same day.

Was it that Right Royal had a highly inheritable & necessary trait? I reckon so….
Right Royal is the 3-f family strain. His maternal pedigree is highly infused with 3 branches.

right royal (fr) 1958

Right Royal (Fr) 1958

Black Caviar traces majorly to Gainsborough sire of sons Hyperion 6-e, Mah Mahal 9-c, Solario – 26.
Over 7 generations, Black Caviar’s pedigree has merged & re-emerged highly influential breeders. It is a distinctive pedigree at the front, and tight at the engine-room beyond.

(n.b. It is notable the range of Gainsborough still stamps many contemporary high-achievers but also somewhat declining in itself as Nearco overtakes (as a global cycle). Nearco seemingly underpins the global thoroughbred programs for young high-performing stock. Franco Varola (Typology of the Racehorse) noted Nearco’s sons developed a certain dislike of further training at the end of their three-old season and though mostly brilliant as a sire, Nearco was not consistent where not one of his sons took a win of a major weight-for-age race as a four-year old. However, what maybe more alarming and what can be suggested is that the thoroughbred ‘pool’ has disturbingly decreased, losing diversity and also with the loss of broodmares as the main economies shorten, alongside breeding sustainability.)

Genetic dominance, like key markers construct a potent balance which is evident as they navigate & circulate to originating lines.

To realize how ‘strains’ are dynamically revolving through inter-changing lines and also at best, assess how/where they strike may prevent unnecessary breeding and restore confidence.

There is a bygone expression: all things return to originating source – All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again. Ecclesiastes 1:7

The annotation may seem too bewilderingfor the thoroughbred world, yet Nature herself, reveals such an order where bulb flowers with hybrid colouration can return to white and a grafted weeping maple emerges off-shoots, which if developed are not same.

Does it seem silly, to suggest Nature even with controlled-selective breeding is the truer, modernizer of breeding?
I would have no hesitation in saying those Sunline’s, Frankel’s and Black Caviar’s are prime examples of genetic dominance and of natural balance.

Selected for optimal speed, the thoroughbred has been on a long, inexact breeding journey: that of a threesome base of oriental-eastern progenitors.

The soul of better breeding is alongside Nature’s science upon a horse. The character of a true champion can be a natural freak or designed equally from the breeding equation.

You just need to know where the diamond in the pedigree lies…..
