Bored by wintry-blues, TBL went to the local race meeting.

Strode into the main entrance and spotted horse no.6. Eye appeal was enough.

Took a bet & it was a good start to the day. Brought myself lunch (not so good there) and walked by the den of punters, and on through to the outside, where the small crowd of owners and connections socialized from the cold.

As pondering the who’s who of owner-partnership fraternity, where the parties eagerly hung to jockeys & trainers view of events…my friend said, ‘things don’t change’ and TBL chuckled knowingly.

‘If’, if, if you see… has the longest word in the human book and ‘if’ that horse wasn’t in a bad position, it would of been in-the-money, having made up its ground.

TBL remembered the ol’ Russian proverb: ‘hope is the mother of all fools’.

Next race and coming into the birdcage was a nervous mare. Surprised at the astonishingly elongated back pastern where the fetlock almost appeared ready to collapse beneath. Her awkwardness upset TBL’s idealism of the perfect specimen. (joke) How could it have a show?

Galileo mare

WHAT(?)…effortlessly, she flew past the post –  a smooth gliding action which touched invisibly upon the turf.

The mare was by the great Galileo.

– yeah, TBL got this wrong.  It was a message to reboot and remind. Think & think again, what-is(?) well-bred correctness?

Ultimately, breeding is Get the Best. The best thoroughbred where its poetry is swiftness: a beautiful ‘natural’ easy momentum speed surging through veins of a classic thoroughbred animal.

The clues of careful breeding come upon a genotype pedigree which yields to deeper layering  – the familial ‘groups’ (in-breeding) as belonging to the individuals (as ‘race’-named): these hierarchal like-tiers which imperceptibly, preside through thoroughbred breeding.

It persists in generations what is potential – the aim to procure an above normal individual. A horse (in flesh) may be ugly, unlikeable, something physically incorrect etc, but never mind, the ‘X’ factor is gait, motion and speed.

This is what beauty of racing actually is – to watch and experience it. Shivers go down your spine.

By identifying (again & again) the KPI’s (of pedigrees) follow the family by viewing family-tables working structure. Family tables are like post-codes that profile exactly the genetic engine. Specifically, tap-root(s) maternal, its generational unfolding, upgrading to the present individual.

The family wheels keep going smooth, providing the KPI’s are substantially in place.

GALILEO, SEA THE STARS, Epsom Derby winner MASAR

Many articles on these mighty horses take obvious bits of information without penetrating particular peculiarities which greatly seam the genetics. The dam’s family ‘connections’ which keeps the knitting together. Exceptional ‘dam’ strain (family 9-h)intertwines another exceptional ‘dam’ strain (5-h), the most potent proliferating thoroughbred strains in existence where it is also to gauge their genetic prowess on the constant evolutionary move of the thoroughbred.

Opportunity lies in hidden details which populist breeding propaganda fails to inform detail, detail, detail.

It is to ‘conserve’ , source, support bloodlines. However from this ol’ TBL book of mine….family-table  ‘pairing’ of strains takes the ‘map’ but appropriately revise from the oldest bloodlines now barely visible (some are rare); they from the cultural/economic/political history of horses ‘lost & hidden in time’.

“Birkhahn began his stallion career at the Graditz National Stud in East Germany, where he was leading sire of winners five times. He was bought by Baroness Gabrielle von Oppenheim of the Schlenderhan Stud in 1960 and although he died five years later, he was leading West German sire of winners three times posthumously.” Peter Willet – The Classic Racehorse

birkhahn

“His sire Alchimist (family 9-h) won the Grosser Preis von Baden-Baden, Grosser Preis von Berlin, Grosser Preis von Kohn and was the leading sire in Germany. Unfortunately, when the Russians swept into Germany at the end of the war, Alchimist was slaughtered for food”. Ken McLean – Designing Speed in the Racehorse

And, as for the subject mare above, well what-do-you-know….Birkhahn merges onto the maternal tap-root line.

Bulwark, Tarzino

It goes…. thoroughbred pedigrees (as analysis) is open to any reasonable interpretation.

I will say however, the superior potential racehorse with quality pedigree are a bare few.  Most are average material, race able but working for it. Within, I like to see a credible plus factor which strongly pushes a button,  towards ‘artisan’ bred and overturning hybrid breeding complexity.

These pedigrees work unifying. Maybe outcross, in-bred, templates or patterns noted, yet not always conforming to replications (i.e. nicking crosses) but which yields accumulated evolutionary progression.

Not all pedigrees can be explained…but I do find spectacular $ failures are pedigree/blood-type confusion, through the outcross (say to many families) or towards two major type relationships not melding for its present generation. Yet, the precociousness phenotype may convey magnificence in the sale ring.

Notably, the ‘clean’ balanced genotype template shall not always equate to ‘flesh’ . The horse has to offer ‘captivation’.

A few weeks ago, I went to see the in-foal broodmare (maiden).

She looked fair, good in a potential, honest way. Fit. Well. Strong.

TBL & mare…

I left the paddock happy, assured, on-track.

So I’m gonna say,  (after the homework) work out your own x-factor ‘thing’ – the hidden eloquence of the thoroughbred horse. It is to see through walk, type, size, age. Are ‘we’ impressed….? – ‘go’ over and above the ‘record’.

Here are some ‘things’ I genuinely believe. The horse at any age has to remind one of its verve, its ‘will’, its ‘eye’, its fire ‘within’. Horse on fire.

Remember? Green Monkey, Plavius, Rockstardom are $$$$$$$$$$ bungled examples and were seemingly strong family & sire, correct pedigrees with equally, striking athletic constitution. But a oh-no scenario.

Then ponder the genotype trickster….one becomes a stallion with its Australian G.1 racing credentials. The other, is dud.

I saw Tarzino (NZ), (Tavistock from Zarzino) at stud, and I remember also viewing his younger full brother Bulwark as yearling, to race at tail-end of the field. Then, I saw another yearling colt by another sire but with same maternal family displaying his similar ‘zing’ as Tarzino, only to  go under the hammer under $10k. (the bloodlines, family 5-h factoring) would still kick the ‘nick’. Astonishing, were my thoughts…..

To my mind what marks out the phenotype individual, is natural temperament, the intelligent ‘eye’ of thoroughbred spirit, the bounce step, the ‘together’ package. Bulwark (affectionately raised as Walter)

different ‘type’ full brother to Tarzino

had a too kind, gentle, to easy disposition and Tarzino well….Tarzino & the Cinna ‘strain’

At end of the day, shopping, selling, owning…. Knowledge folks, now that’s ya’ horse know what you have, with what you’ve got.

Looking over a recent broodmare catalogue, I was sceptical and disappointed at selection & merits of the breeding. Most where ex-stud jobs, end-of-line mares to be disposed as propositions for hopeful breeding. Obviously, the stallion mating’s aimed at wanna-be hopeful buyers.

Generally speaking….the commercial-bred can be ‘horse-wastage’. If purchased, it becomes a very patient wait for the right time/right stallion to come onto the stallion-breeding scene –  as you upgrade the dam through her progeny to their generational best. Differentiation (principles of strong-breeding) must be applied.

A dynamic pedigree purely/rightly ‘talks’ potential, hits upon patterns, hits upon dynamic traits, hits outright SMART. It seems so obvious, so simple and yet is (as an entire pedigree) intermittent. Thus researching pedigrees of either sex, age and applying SMART factoring,  will severely cut down a catalogue to a mere few.

It brings joy where a genotype pedigree fulfils TBL dynamics – the entire pedigree complements familial lines, charged with strains which shall never ever leave the hierarchy thoroughbred plus with the hybrid components to the breeding lines.

That is the clean and mean template which TBL urges YOU to pursuit.

Our subject: 3 year chestnut colt, USA bred, named Justify  is a specimen with such a template and don’t you love it…..”just a big ol’ red horse with a big, powerful stride, as quoted by his jockey Mike Smith as he talks of his mount of winning the 2018 Kentucky & Santa Anita Derby.

What makes him (Justify) maybe a little more elite than another horse … you have to wonder that, cardiovascular-wise, if he’s not a little superior.” veterinarian Kevin Dunlavy.

Explore the fundamntals –  Justify (Scat-Daddy USA from Stage Magic (USA) by Ghostzapper (USA) template has Mr Prospector/Nijinsky with strong dosages of Bold Ruler. See here: http://www.pedigreequery.com/justify10

It directs golden-style template (where/if you ‘work’ female family tables carries the 13/8 signature). Screen carefully….how Mr Prospector/Seattle Slew/Pulpit/Jet-Pilot all carry the familial ancestress Frizette. Blood group structure…….

TBL notes the repeat pattern, the repeat Frizette co-relationship to (*8) families – a repeated force complementary lines. Its there in maternal evolutionary history……if you look hard.

We always knew Ghostzapper(USA), a 23b female family, to be exceptional  broodmare sire. How so?

The true breeding-trait of superior best work mighty slow from ancestral superior genes to upgrade/hold individual pedigrees. This is the vital family (*23b).

Thoroughbreds and the breeding game. (no matter how small!) ….. TBL encourages you to keep pedigree simple, keep it direct/sharp on crucial maternal strains to unfold their dynamic superior influences.
