Its about uncovering pedigree to examine the female lines.

Many discussions I had with father and friends towards ideals: breeding genuine lines/genuine families.

Old days, Dad was a reputable breeder of stud Friesian cows, 40 years +. Add to that, a number of beefies, and the few thoroughbreds.

The breeding technique where his guiding principle – endlessly screening ‘purity’ direct, near as to ‘roots’.

Understandably one might wonder what dairying, farming practices, has to do with today’s thoroughbreds. Well, its these breeding dynamics which breed stock.

Its the diligence to understand.

No technology, repeatedly read history, breeding books, analysing, read-between-lines, deduce and come upon ancestral relationships. Out to the paddocks and observe ‘type. Its the yarning over a back-fence where many ‘unscripted’ understandings towards breeding finds its breadth, breed-to-purpose and performance.

–  onwards strength as specie.

The thoroughbred is still and always hybrid: its composite strains through bloodlines.

There are favourable ‘family’ strains: come stronger to the thoroughbred population.

Breeding goes through its cyclic, the selection on going & hopefully to appropriate sire. The selection decision has the next generation to; it becomes broodmare sire and its influences to next generations thereof. This is selection: the infusions, the capacity to build the desired effect.

Sir Patrick Hogan said something how, breeding-is-not-racing, racing-is-not-breeding.) Thoroughbred Breeding: A MASTER OF TIME

Father often commented: “what a magnificent animal but as a breeder, he is a disaster down the track. You’ll get into trouble with the likes of these.”

On tour, a woman lightly commented, where mares had gotten too big. This  might also suggest, where is the TB going….?

To breed is not to only aim at esteemed bloodlines, but the depth, with its  optimal phenotype: constitution, ‘gait’, flexible.

Multi-faceted criteria’s take due consideration, what factors breeding to the racehorse ideal ?

Though we recognize breeding landscapes change, and more genetic material is increasingly available, I suggest the core-fundamentals don’t.

And, every now & then we might reflect and be reminded some caution applies.

Such has been the improvement in the anaerobic capacity to todays thoroughbred and the total absence of aerobic improvement or it may even be decline of aerobic performance. These change of the last 30 years must be appreciated in any scientific study of todays thoroughbred. Because the thoroughbred has changed, the training and breeding management may no longer be applicable. The anaerobic horse is better, but as a consequence more physiologically fragile.

The racing news – Thunder Snow wins the Dubai World Cup, sired by Helmet.

We’ve done our pedigree genetic-dynamisms well before re: this bloke Breeding Dynamics: Put the HELMET on and reckoned (right-on)  never a hit n’ miss type of sire. He has it all. Everywhere.

TBL genetic ‘strain’ philosophy…. yes, Helmet’s deep-down potency carries abundantly.  A son of Exceed an Excel, the breeding excellence he was, I am fascinated & drawn to the broodmare lines, Antwerpen (GER) ff 7-f, the female tail, bred into/onto the female fame indexes ff 4-0: 5th remove (maternal) where it Counts best.

So, how relevant is this unique strain (4-o) to breeding? American Pharoah pows a ‘Grand Slam’

Unifying the strains, co-uniting breeding, has surely enforced my ‘ideas’ and how we can explore the paradox, the mysteries of knitting strains for selective- breeding and how an individual’s strength arises from its past. That is to draw on core dominant strains which will satisfie in-breeding convention (also out-crossing) but also takes advancement to ‘pool’ co-affiliated strains and hence, completion of a genotype pedigree. That’s paperwork…..!

Eccentrically, I think of ‘breeding’ as the 3-legged stool: balance, template, structure. The triangle is also a useful symbol, each line, as features, aligns to a geometric recipe. By symbolic figurations, I am to ‘remember’  thoroughbred evolutionary typology and how ‘nature’ emerges to re-establish.

A long-in-the-tooth breeder (not horses) once told me it only took 2 strains. I nodded agreeably to the complexity of the simplicity. Perhaps I should square-off, and mention  a few distinctive patterns are so apparent, which mainstream misses. I am not hard-nosed (i.e. facts and maths/science) however there is no doubt ‘patterns’ existing to thoroughbred female-family co-associations.

The eternal 5-h female family i.e. Nureyev , Sadlers Wells goes anywhere, but namely ff. 3 branches. Think –  ancestress, Pocahontas.

Female family branches: 13/ 8.

2 – 4 -7

9/4

11/12

Some lines are short-supply!

It is is plausible ‘breeding’ is dealing with distinct strains in distinct groups finding templates that harness again & again the better bred or superior bred. In other words, there are pyramid thoroughbred tiers of best, better superior bred, (how they tie in)filtering down to broader bands. In such a way one might figure why broodmares are better nicked, better producers within the same band-range to that of the stallion.

Important – The availability of the female family numbers  are just so imperative to comprehend how/where nature maybe sourcing ‘purity’; taking strength through to a composite bred animal. below….

although the system is still discredited – it has been thoroughly endorsed by many intellectual breeders and students.   Leon Rasmussen

genetic families, Pretty Polly (IRE), Seachange, Thoroughbreds

IN memory lane…. of The New Zealand Horse of the Year 2006/07/08: Seachange (NZ) ex-Cape Cross (IRE) from Just Cruising (AUS) & so it was way back then, TBL said ‘for sure, another genuine champion on the rise’.

– yep folks,  no hesitation even when Seachange with her bent knobbly knees, that almost waved to every doubtin’ Thomas on course before her 7 Group 1 wins.

wp-1516671081128..jpg

Seachange – photo credit: The Oaks Stud,

TBL’s pedigree stance was then job, half-done, but with just enough at foot: ‘figuring’ his clues went entirely away from acceptable convention.

How?

*Take note: #14c – Nearctic, St Paddy, Donatello, Cape Cross transiting.  Each deriving from  matriarchal ancestress Pretty Polly (IRE). http://www.pedigreequery.com/seachange. With TBL principle, take note where these strains impact – Cape Cross ‘Y’, XX – St Paddy, maternal broodmare sire ‘strain’ and Donatello matri-linear 7th remove. Rather than viewing separately, treat these as a collective band-width. *

Pretty Polly (IRE)

TBL recalls Seachange pedigree reviews,  –  ‘The duplications that are present further back are nothing special and certainly nothing for pedigree gurus to wax on about.’

Seemly, unable to fathom the outcross pedigree beyond 5th remove, the devils in details are commonly 5th – 7th remove where many mainstream theorists  shall  point over the seemingly obvious: usually close in-breeding through to the somewhat expectation that all family relationships are replicated,  repeat, closely upon dosage. Yes n’ No, at-times but….

Not near enough. As it was and still  TBL tired of elusive articles: this one is related to that one and this full sister to….. if you get the drift. (Every  sire & mating changes!)

Such conclusions are agreeable (of families) but vague. It does not reveal the ‘genie’ –  what puts together great, superior thoroughbred breeding; the immeasurable called genetics.

The very timeworn, old, forgotten and discredited Australian Bruce Lowe figuring system: the Tesio design/principles, written & researched did not or could not reveal any exactness. Yet, it remarkably dawns what the elementary is.

(please do read Sir Patrick Hogan, his philosophy & comments – Thoroughbred Breeding: A MASTER OF TIME

It was transcribed… the Australian Bruce Lowe would walk into any breeders paddock and instantly recognize the family and the ‘type’. The little vintage book is worth reading patiently. But,….you shall need to further analyse to older origins by maternal.

Federico Tesio, though having written a few rare books never divulged his ‘secret’. The problem it seems was for others to solve. Still is.

One ‘Tesio’ factor overlooked where his darling wife Lydia, and business partner, whom sought the investor investment: she whom was secretary and also ‘took record’ of female lines (traceability) and they together must of realized unavoidable features which also had clues in civil war(s), history, culture and sociology demonstrating purposeful horse-breeding.

IMG_20180122_123820_1.jpg

Tesio’s co-contribution to the Bobinski tables

These shall ‘clue’ evolutionary courses before the Thoroughbred Registry & also within it, as thoroughbred breeding phrases underwent ‘fixing’.

Other sport-horse pedigree aficionados have also touched upon IT in a similar way.

TBL reckons it is not only ‘strain’ but type or recognizing ‘type’ within. Not bloodlines….but the Blood-Line-group, natural and primal to itself which favourably takes lead and where breeding was & folds through. That is helpful or unhelpful to the broodmare herself.

In so many varied ways, breeding is ecological development.

It can be appreciated social media does not inform: it creates ‘buzz’. The impression of laidback success, the blurred lines of racing reliability, the breeding morphed & re-classified as profitable commerciality and the gambling media network supports a delightful ignorance which continually intensifies and complicates and begs at lady-luck’s mercy.

Opportunity is infinite and finding its jig-saw pieces has rewards.

Albeit abstract, TBL distinguishes there an Expressive-Intelligent link remaining true to this day. It undoubtedly lifts pedigree to potential-marked. She is….funny little, Mannie Gray http://www.tbheritage.com/Portraits/MannieGray.html

Why? to keep the thoroughbred, as species,  surviving ‘best’. Reference point, explore pre-American bloodstock breeding.

Essentially intricacy is to comprehend ‘pedigree’ as quantum waves carrying structure and moreover, the heightened dynamic velocity ‘within’ (genotype) upon the individual as phenotype.

Wordy, I know….but this may help. Moving on from Danehill

There is much to think on.

Here we transcribe from the then, very informative Australasian Thoroughbred Science Review – January 1987.

The thoroughbred is not a homogeneous breed; it comes in many shapes, and sizes and shows great variations in racing performance. The term “best racehorse” is not very meaningful, unless it is qualified by the type of horse. E.g. “best sprinter”, “best stayer” etc. Any further consideration of the racehorse requires a systematic subdivision into types. A scientific consideration demands that the type of racehorse can be specified. An ideal system would describe a race horse with respect to five qualities.

  • Body type or confirmation
  • Gait pattern or the way the horse gallops
  • The distance the horse races over.
  • The “style” of racing.
  • The “ability” of the horse.
