Carbine started a sire line which was to gain international recognition and make an impact on English Derby history. His greatest product was undoutedly Spearmint, who won the 1906 English Derby. A bad-legged horse who cost only 300 gns, Spearmint was from Maid of the Mint by Minting. He beat a top Derby field and also won the prestigious Grand Prix de Paris. He was retired after only five starts. Carbine won the 1890 Melbourne Cup under 10.5, 147 lbs, 66 kgs by 2,1/2 lengths – a weight-carrying record for the 3200m.

Spearmint

Dr Fager carried weights up to 139 lbs. Under 134 lbs he shatters a world record.

Plucky Liege (1912) by Spearmint out of Concertina (1896) by St Simon out of Comic Song (1884) imported into France 1915 as the immortal name of this great broodmare is dam of six great stallions, Sir Gallahad III, Bull Dog, Quatre Bras II, Admiral Drake, Bel Aethel and Bois Rousel. Sir Gallahad was champion stallion in U.S.A four times in 1930,1934, and 1940 and his full brother, Bull Dog, in 1943. Admiral Drake made history in France but the “Benjamin” among Plucky Liege progeny foaled in 1935 when she was twenty-three years old, Bois Roussel. Bois Roussel’s great win in the Epsom Derby 1938 is still history. Bred by Monsieur Leon Volterra, in whose colours Bois Roussel, a son of Vatout, won his first race, the Prix Juigne at Longchamp in a field of seventeen, and afterwards sold to Mr Peter Beatty. Bois Rousel’s only race in England was for the Derby, which he won by four lengths from Scottish Union Pasch and nineteen others. Returning to his native country to run for the Grand Prix de Paris, in which Bois Roussel finished third to Nearco. (Racing Review Annual 1952)
