Know your horse, is to identify pedigree, where the dynamics of inheritance can expose latent talent.

Yet as it goes… breeding/racehorse ownerships may defer to trainer’s advice.

Many shall flinch at fools n’ horses and this is how unknown Lil Caesar became Lucky Year .

How mystique comes draped upon the world of thoroughbreds.

The Lil’ Caesar/Lucky Year pedigree has genetic leaning to suggest he was worth watching and given time to develop.

He was never an average hand-me-down.

The Thoroughbred Link determination is to unfold the female distaff and what may produce through a chosen sire.

A common viewpoint is to digress through racing performance (of parents) but let’s observe ‘how’ she is genetically characterized.

With pedigree software –  explore dam Natural Lil, the dam of Lucky Year.

Mindfully, step away from names of individuals, to concentrate at ‘strains’ (akin to female-family numbers) and those connections.

Working deep (i.e. 5th remove & beyond) is to observe the formative process, the breeding evolutionary cycle which conveys a ‘house-that-is-building…’

Natural Lil (AUS) (family 2-e) encompasses other 2-e strains: Dhoti (GB) at 9th remove. It is ‘supporting’ and compounding that strain, forward refining from the originating Family strains. It’s the ‘x’ within the X.

Strange as it may seem – it is like braiding family-colour, as the thoroughbred is hybrid. This basement: the 2-e foundation where the view is to recognise its ‘compounding’ to others.

TESIO principles, his quotes

will inherit certain characters from his sire and his dam, others from his four grandparents, still others from his sixteen great grandparents and so on to back to the origin of the species.

…select his parents in such a way that one particular ancestor will occupy more than one place in his pedigree, thus ensuring a greater probability that certain desired characteristics will be inherited.

Observe another major dominant strain 1-P through the sire Redoubt 1-P, his sire Court Martial, 1-P . Court Martial‘hot’ anywhere, in my books.

Whilst pedigree is working over the myriad of female ‘strains’, the importance is to gather what suggests main affiliation as provided by predecessors. (xx,xY,xx, xY commonality)

Stage II, deduce the broodmare sire – Naturalism. It is at this point the need to ascertain how the pedigree may further work with the sire Holy Roman Emperor.

We check for the distinguishing strains which co-influence. This is because various ‘strains’ represent ‘how’ the pattern holds breeding through the individual.

Remember, bloodlines attract backwards.

The magnifying glass goes on the ‘Black Flash’, Zephyr Bay

Despite low fertility, he was no lightweight breeder.

There Zephyr Bay goes across with Secretariat, picking up analogous strains. Firstly note – Zephyr Bay dam’s sire, Pan 2-e (FR) 1947,  further Zephyr’s sire, Biscay 2-O (AUS 1965)

It is not absolute but sire’s broodmare sire over broodmare sire, and or either the dam’s grand broodmare sire tend to direct the added genetic robustness. More so by individuals thru’ parallel strains, rather than in-breeding close of same individual. The cleverness is to re-visit the female strains which place familial attributes collected rather than separately fashion the pedigree with full matched sire representation.

Attentively – ‘what’ pushes components of a pedigree towards refined genetic affiliation.

Stage III, – break through the sire’s attributes from successful progeny.

Breaking down superior progeny is a good way to pin his most preferred lines – the hunch of what-can-go-where!

(I will make a point here – while computer analysis calculates statistics, it shines upon ‘numbers’ & commercial siring. The principles I apply are to utilize female strains as contributed which will incorporate lesser known individuals thus extending, to appreciate the wider capability and availability which is discernible at 5th- 7th, 9th remove.)

What tweaks the nick for Holy Roman Emperor takes precedence on these strains.

Principally,

  1. chiefly Prince Rose* (10-c) sire of Princequillo, Black Toney (USA 1911) 10-c grandsire of Blue Larkspur 8-f (USA 1926), Artic Prince (GB 1946) 10-C
  2. 10 branches & 10-a strains inclusively as support.
  3. The Minstrel * (CAN 1974) (8-f) – incl. Victoria Park (CAN 1957 10-C)
  4. 1-P , aka Court Martial and others by same branch.
  5. 2-o, 2-e

Where sire, with broodmare sires embrace those strains, prospect is elevated.

Our subject horse Lucky Year has a familiar genetic spin, favourably comparable to superior performers. Briefly, dam’s broodmare sire Naturalism via Prince John, Zephyr Bay, Redoubt by Court Martial.

Compare on these successes: –

Mongolian Khan (10-d): strains 10-C (Imperial March (CAN 1947), Court Martial 1-P, via Vain.

Designs on Rome (8-f): The Minstrel (as above*), Prince John (as above*) & How (USA 1948) grandson of Prince Rose, son of Princequillo. Princequillo – 5s x 7d x 5D

Homecoming Queen: Mount Hagen 1-P (FR 1971), Blue Larkspur 8-f, via Francis S. (USA 1957), Diesis 2-O (GB 1980) broodmare sire of dam Lagrion,

Rich Tapestry (10-a): Prince John* – 6S x 9D x 9D x 9D, 1-P (Sodium GB 1963) infused to dam’s female distaff

Beauty Only: Princequillo 5s x 8D x 7D x 7d, The Tetrarch 2-O 8X x9D x9d, Sallust 2-O infused to dam Goldendale, 2-O via Royal Academy

Banimpire: Princequillo 5s x 4d x 7D, strains 10-a via Riverman & broodmare sire Kris S

Mango Diva: Prince Rose* 6S x 9D x 9D x9D, 1-P Sodium GB 1963 infused to dam, Mango Chief.

(n.b. accounting for 10 strains, the branches all run back through to foundation/ancestress Queen Mary 1843. http://www.tbheritage.com/Portraits/QueenMary.html. Comprehending the foundation underwrites the evolutionary phrases in the thoroughbred.

It is a huge mistake to see strains as minimal: the approach to apply is like ruling markers towards ‘key’ within an individual’s breeding. Certainly you shall engage many others, repeating dominance aka Hyperion – Nasrullah – Nearco; through to contemporaries like Danehill this however is fundamental to all thoroughbreds.

In other words they are thoroughbred framework: the 3-legged stool. Making the selective differentiation is vital.

The variances are deep texture in the wood. It can’t be ignored. Practically, we’re looking for the fine-tuning of pedigree rather than rounded norms.

Explore away from obvious in-breds, or those popular crosses to establish distinctiveness within lines.

For satisfaction, I checked a few lesser H.R.E progeny from superior sires, broodmare sires.

Through multifaceted arrangements, (10 families, 2-O), or Princequillo can be present, but indications are ineffectual penetration or lack-of-depth. This can sound contrary to points I’ve made, but the measure of success is undoubtedly upon inclusive depth.

It however conveys further conclusion where I feel the foremost obstacle is where by female distaff are ‘shortened’ through non-layering of familiar families, as attempted to explain above re: Natural Lil (2-e) family. I have noted many times over, the dispersing of many wide ‘lines’/strains weakens base foundation throwing the unfortunate individual where they never can be a sound performer on track.

It somewhat illuminates why super superior champions are justly & uncannily rare: sound breeding comes from past exercise – before the dam meets stallion thus, the performance/generational cycle peaks, improves or falls. The stallion’s pre-potency ‘arranges’ or selects the breeding.
