Black Caviars don’t come along every day – P. Moody (trainer)
Black Caviar (Aus) – 2010 WTR World Sprinter – a 135 rating 2011 Top Racehorse in the world.
With research upon Haplotype bloodlines, TBL re-examines the Black Caviar pedigree.
Superior quality breeding always utilizes the empyrean influence to St. Simon (by Galopin or Delight which remains still indeterminable, however goes conclusive to Byerley Turk male lineage, see Porter) out of St. Angela from King Tom. Further, the examination of why his lines are a solid source establishes Harkaway on this blog, as further progressed through his son King Tom.
US researcher Kathleen Kirsan advises Harkaway lines were best known for steeplechasers & hunters of the day. Kirsan also introduces the late Alex Fell, an astute writer/researcher of her much-acclaimed ‘Irish Draught Horse’ book – Ireland’s only native breed of horse.
The Irish Draught can be observed in this video. https://www.tiktok.com/@discoverthehorse/video/7385954838997142814
It is not by coincidence… and where expressed by Fell, that a perfect Irish draught mare Horna Honey carries a TB influence through Flying Hackle by b/m sire ***Atheling from a dam by King Tom and this superior bred mare shall make her influence as discussed below.
Black Caviar’s front pedigree, places 3×4 Vain by Wilkes (Court Martial) from dam Sans Taras – a family that is showing up frequently amongst superior Australasian racehorses. (n.b. 0bserve Sans Taras to Le Fabuleux (FR) broodmare sire of Unbridled (USA)
Court Martial (Fair Trial – b/m sire Hurry On) assigns family, f.f. 1-P, same to Black Caviar.
Court Martial distaff @ Winkipop by St Simon’s son William the Third takes 4×4 King Tom by Harkaway.
(n.b. @ Winkipop a full sister to Winkie (GB) – a reasonable and successful stallion that got winners at all distances thru New Zealand and Australia. Best known as b/m sire of Phar Lap.)
Similarly … Black Caviar’s distaff @ Third Trick by William the Third (by S.S) from King Tom daughter Hilarity > 4×4 King Tom by Harkaway
Hornbeam, broodmare sire of Lunchtime, sire of Snippets, sire of Black Caviar’s 2nd dam is another assigned family, f.f. 1-P. Again...Hornbeams 5th dam by St Simon’s son William the Third.
3×4 Vain – his 4th dam Lady Pop has 4 lines to Harkaway via King Tom and Austrey, the grand-dam of sire, Chester (AUS) – 3rd dam sire of Popinjay (Aus). The ancestry to Vain’s distaff ff.A-10 across certain bred-type lines upon Harkaway – *Lexington – Voltigeur + Bend Or, Lord Clifden (“One horse for whom the revised pedigree of Bend Or makes even more significance is the mare Martha Lynn, who was a huge factor in the pedigrees of stallions of the middle of the 19th century onwards” – Porter
*Lexington – the US thoroughbred classic Sire ‘back-bone’ – a 15.3 hands phenotype with untiring ability. The trait stamps exceptionally competitive through broodmare sire of Spendthrift sire of Hastings, sire of Fair Play, sire of Man O’ War, regenerative. The Lexington influence seen to Mata Hari, dam of Spy Song. (take note to extraordinary Phenotype – Lexington photo – https://pastthewire.com/lexington-the-granddaddy-of-them-all/
What is more important is the legacy of great stallions like Lexington, Glencoe, Domino, Sir Gallahad III, Bull Dog and Man O’War in the gene pool of broodmares. Their impact is far greater on the breed via broodmares than via any male line.
Ken McLean
Mata Hari also carries two further influences which are also to Vain’s pedigree – Darebin (Aus) b/m sire of Commando & Star Ruby (GB) 3rd dam sire of Mata Hari. @ Vain/Lady Pop her granddam by Star Ruby (GB) and her 3rd dam by Darebin (Aus).
Haplotypes:
By Studbook, the female family 1-P branch assigns #Haplotype N2a. The Studbook f.f. 1-P branched from 1-O. However, the #Haplotype at f.f.1-O reveals #I2a (Lady Atheling IRE 1890 by ***Atheling > & this dam takes 4x4x5 Harkaway! Further Lady Atheling is the dam ancestor of an 1994 Australian mare unnamed. (it may be suggested/ possible, this is Scandinavia 1994?? Error at/after Lady Atheling (GB 1890), at/before a 1994 AUS mare
Applying the pre-supposition @ Haplotype #I2a/1, with distaff Black Caviar, shall take further co-affinity with 2x Wilkes dam Sans Taras where the female family 13, assigns #Haplotype I2a1. (MRCA – Milbanke’s Black Mare (GB 1705c) by *Makeless)
Pedigree Query information to *Makeless breeding & https://www.pedigreequery.com/makeless indicates where Type and Cross founders emerged. To PQ informational notes: the #GA/GB with its Chestnut Thornton (family 2) what Harkaway ancestry assigns to.
The #Haplotype I2a/1 indicates its affinity for GoldolphinArabian/Barb male lines. Its 1st foundation below…
| I2a1 – 11, 11-a, 11-c, St Angela, daughter Angelica dam of Orme, 11-d, 11-e, 11-f, 11-g | MRCA – Sister (GB 1743) to Regulus by Godolphin Arabian/Barb |
The broodmare sire of Court Martial to Hurry On viz.tail-male #GA/GB. Again, #GA/GB Man o’ War daughter Firetop (USA) 5th dam of Nijinsky. Again I2a1 comes distinctive to Reine-de-Course dam Crimson Saint, dam of Royal Academy whom takes 11x St Angela (f.f.11-c, Haplotype I2a1). Further the distaff takes 6x Orme from St Angela’s daughter Angelica (f.f. 11-c, Haplotype I2a1.)

New Zealand breeding and once a market for best stayers with superior classic speed stood its breeding to #GA/B Precipitation male line with its cross to Fair Trial >f.f. 9c – Haplotype L1). Final Orders (NZ) 4x5x5 Hurry On (#GA/GB male line) and 4×3 Fair Trial to daughter Vin D’ Armour 6×5 Mumtaz Mahal > f.f. 9c – Haplotype L1 as 2nd dam of Black Caviar’s sire Bel Esprit.
Black Caviar’s broodmare sire – the genuine sire Desert Sun (sire of wonder mare Sunline (NZ) 48 starts for 32 wins & b/m sire to world-class sprinter Nature Strip (AUS) – 43 starts for 22 wins + notably, Egyptian Raine, La Bella Dama and Moralee) from the global sire line in Green Desert (Danzig) from the Courtly Dee family noting War Admiral by Man O’ War (#GA/GB) to distaff’s family strains developed by Papyrus, Felstead, 5×5 Fairway, sire of Fair Trial (Fairway f.f. 13-e #Haplotype I2a1) & 4sx5s Umidwar; a certain pre-potency inclusive to Desert Sun’s dam Solar > 34x St Simon by Galopin ( or, Delight?) from St Angela by King Tom by Harkaway.
