In the annals of time, countless majestic racehorses or sires or mares have faded into depths of oblivion. They were more than racehorses, they were paragons of strength, grace, and nobility.
‘Snippets‘ in Time
Buzzard
Buzzard was the sire of one hundred and eighty-nine winners of prizes amounting to 52,553sovs., with six Cups. He was sold to the United States late in 1804 and he covered in Kentucky where he helped to lay the foundation of the American Turf until 1811 where he died at the age of twenty-four years. Through his most celebrated sons – Castrel, Selim, and Rubens – the blood of this famous horse came down. Rubens is the grand dam sire of Defence, dam sire of Diversion (f.f. 5-i)
Ellen Horne (the ancestral distaff to Frankel)
In 1852, a Colonel Pearson was looking for a hack for his wife and purchased a mare and her unweaned foal from their owner and breeder, the Duke of Grafton. For the mare who was named Ellen Horne he gave 18 gns., and for the foal she had at foot and which was afterwards, known as Paradigm, he disbursed an extra 12 gns., for the two. Ellen Horne was very evidently not a great success as a ride for the lady, so she she was mated up again at the age of twenty and became the dam of Rouge Rose the dam in turn, of Bend Or a son of the Derby, Alexandra Plate and Ascot Gold Cup Winner, *Doncaster which was successful in the Derby and nine other events of in all, Pounds17,518 and then became one of the greatest sire of all time and one that has left his name as the ancestor of the greatest sire of to-day not only in this country but abroad. (n.b. PQ notes to *Bend Or, ie Tadcaster). Further Ellen Horne, 4th dam to Chelandry & Ladas. (Chelandry – Never Say Die (1954 Derby, St Leger), Tomy Lee (1959 Kentucky Derby), Genuine Risk (1980 Kentucky Derby), Swale (1984 Kentucky Derby, Belmont), Zino (1982 2000 Guineas), Shadeed (1985 2000 Guineas), Ravinella (1988 1000 Guineas, Poule d’Essai des Pouliches), High Chaparral (2002 Derby, Irish Derby), Sir Winston (2019 Belmont) Jannah Rose (2023 G1 Prix Saint Alary)
The Tesio filly, Romanella (El Greco – Barbara Burrini, a Papyrus mare imported from England) won easily enough all major features up to the Criterium Nazionale. She ran unplaced in the Gran Criterium. That was the last race for Romanella, who was retired to stud early in 1946, because her fragility forbade any serious classic training. This filly was probably a good precocious flyer. https://www.pedigreequery.com/ribot Happenings in Italy 1945 Breeders Review.
https://www.pedigreequery.com/traghetto– Traghetto suffered the consequences of his extreme speed. The champion had run the 1 7/8 miles of the course in the exceptional time of 3 min. 9 sec on a course dried up that caused and developed problems for horses in competition. The Cavaliere d’Arpino horses have a natural tendency towards tendon problems. Happenings in Italy 1945 Breeders Review.
