Saltram – 1780
Evolutionary Blood
Saltram, the British Thoroughbred racehorse was bred by General John Parker at Saltram House located near Plympton in Devon, England. On his estates, Jack reclaimed areas of marshland at a cost of £15,000 in order to build a racecourse.
When Saltram was imported into Virginia in 1799 by ~~William Lightfoot, he sired the dams of Timoleon, Sir Hal and Tennessee Oscar, Saltram son (Diomed) 1808 and the grandam of Aratus running 2, 3 and 4 mile heats.
Saltram stood 15 hands 3 inches elegant & highly formed though missing one eye. To his 3yo career was a Derby winner and won four of his 8 starts. A successful stallion, both in England and America, Saltram established his own branch of the Eclipse sire line.
As Sire in England in good class racehorse 🏆Whiskey (sire of Eleanor (1801 Derby, Oaks) and Pelisse (1804 Oaks)), and Oscar, Royalist, St. Paul and Whip, these having ongoing success as sires when imported into America.
The Saltram stallion-line sons Whip ✅formed his own dynasty to sons & daughters culminating the Standardbred Hal Dale 1926. (more info – https://www.sport-horse-breeder.com/soundness-breeder.html)
On the other hand, a clear fast pace along with sturdy conformation, stamina and soundness, ability for long campaigns and sweet disposition was noted in the progeny of ✅Copperbottom RH, ✅Tom Hal Jr RH, ✅Blackburns Whip RH, Hiatoga RH and their descendants, who established pacing families that eventually made their way into the Standardbred stud book (1891) ref. Kirsan – https://www.sport-horse-breeder.com/Standardbred-Soundness.html
@ Australian Standardbreds to the likes of Popular Alm – 1983 Australian Pacing Champion. Popular Alm raced 62 times over five seasons for 49 wins, seven seconds and three thirds for stake earnings of $710,883. 4×4 Adios by Hal Dale.
🏆🐴Steel Dust 15.0 QH
3×4 Blackburns Whip ➡️Whip ➡️ Saltram + Saltram mare = 3 strains.
The name Steel Dust came to identify an entire breed of horse; they were called “Steeldusts,” the cowboy’s favorite. They were heavy-muscled horses, marked with small ears, a big jaw, remarkable intelligence and lightning speed up to a quarter of a mile.
He is famous for being one of the most influential horses to develop the Quarter Horse as a breed because a large percentage of registered Quarter Horses have him in their pedigrees; so much so that those involved in the formation of the AQHA reportedly considered naming the breed Steel Dust Horses. (ref. AllbreedPedigree)
The Saltram Steel Dust line continues QH Cold Deck, his stock “eye of an Eagle and the step of a deer”
It was quite evident the Steel Dusts had an important influence on our modern stock breeds.

Tennessee Oscar by Wilkes Wonder (USA) from Rosy Clack by Saltram.
- Undefeated in 4 career starts, racing only in Tennessee

- Raced only in local competition, but never lost a race or even a heat and was said never to have been extended by a rival
- Died fall 1825, aged only 11 (credit ref. PQ)
Tennessee Oscar sired Lady Lightfoot (USA) – 2nd dam by Saltram. The pedigree has 3×3 Saltram. (n.b. not to be confused with Lady Lightfoot (Sir Archy) fame
Oscar (Lightfoot’s br.c 1795) Saltram – mare by Highflyer. Described as a horse of great muscular power and fine symmetry being superior speed with docile temperament. https://www.bloodlines.net/TB/Bios/Oscar.htm
Rosetta by Wilkes Wonder (USA) from a Saltram mare. Rosetta is the ancestress of Count Fleet (USA). Wilkes Wonder, a chestnut, also appears to the great Vain (AUS).
From early American turf registries Saltram went, in reference, as the ‘Old Saltram’ (Eclipse) – as secondly named Saltram, son (Diomed) & again, Saltram tail-male in name appeared again. Lightfoot’s mare family as bred in Virginia were highly reputable.
To the Thoroughbred racehorse Saltram daughters, sires, the broodmares with specifically, stallion son Whiskey to his own line progeny – developed a co-affinity pool. It has exerted a lasting influence and can be appreciated as described below.
By Studbook: Saltram progeny are designated to Bruce Low Families 2-a – family 28 – family – A24 – A31. Other daughter lines in Saltram blood possibly died out however his prototype went onwards and selectively to other sport (as indicated above) bred horse breeds.
We shall reflect how the Saltram influence across two nations has inherently impacted superior individuals of the thoroughbred pool.
- Lexington 4x7x6 Saltram
- Marpessa 4×4 Whiskey – 5×5 Saltram. Dam of Pocahontas to herself dam of Stockwell, Rataplan & King Tom & Knight of Kars
- *Hampton (4x Whiskey by Saltram: seen to Julia dam of Phantom (Voltaire), Pocahontas, Emilius
- Priam (Emilius from a Whiskey mare). Imported to Virginia, US in 1837.
Leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland (1839, 1840)
Leading sire in North America (1842, 1844, 1845, 1846) - Priam sets up two important female families 2-i (see below) & f.f. 2-f aka Deep Impact (JPN)

By prototype Families and (suppositional) @Haplotype relationship L2b1/a are assigned to: Family 28 – 1 branch Family 2D – Family 1-W – Family 3 (except 3-c) – 1 branch family 5 – 1 branch 13-a – family 15-a, 1 branch family 18 – 1 branch family 19-c.
America (A1 numerical families etc ) by Haplotype designation are not yet specificized. However to the great American sire, Lexington (USA), the 3 Saltram strains: A24, 2-a, 28 families are contributors in Timoleon, sire Whiskey from Saltram & the Saltram tail-male in Robin Grey (USA). Further Priam’s influence in daughter Crucifix continues very good influences Precipitation (Hurry On), Roxoterra (BRZ). ✅Precipitation/Supreme Court ➡️ distaff Good Magic (USA)
@ family 28, it is also a distaff to Chouberski: the 5×5 contribution of Stockwell dam Pocahontas and to 11x Emily (dam Whiskey mare/Whiskey, as dam Emilius), 9x Muley, 7×6 Voltaire (Phantom/Julia/Whiskey) represents an arising threshold. Chouberski son Brueler has 9x Pocahontas 5x Stockwell. Ksar 12x Pocahontas. The Saltram threshold is maintained in Djebel thru *Hampton described above. Male descendant Luthier (Klarion) 1@Chouberski + 3x Swynford, 14x Stockwell, 8x Hampton.
As bloodlines re-construct an axis to primarily Lexington/Pocahontas let’s look further at Americus Girl the ancestor in family 9c known to all, Mumtaz Mahal et al descendants. This begins where sire 6×5 Muley from Eleanor by Whiskey (Saltram) & Muley Moloch by Muley to pedigree in Maid of Kilcreene. Note, Muley sire of Marpessa, dam of Pocahontas.
This developing upgrade progresses @Americus Girl 4sx4x Lexington – 5x5x6 Stockwell – 7x Emilius – 5x Muley. (Nasrullah, Fair Trial, Mahmoud, Aristophanes et al f.f.9c)
Swynford & Chaucer to dam Canterbury Pilgrim – 10x Whiskey, 5th dam by Emilius. Plus, her sire Tristan from the Queen Mary dam line through to sire Emilius.
The Marchetta family (family 1-W, L2b1/a)_- ancestress, Venus Looking Glass @9x Whiskey (Saltram). It is the ‘nutshell’ pedigree of My Babu (FR). My Babu has 4×4 Swynford @ 5×4 Stockwell, 4x Pocahontas + 8x Emilius with distaff, 6th dam by Emilius viz. family 28. Further Queen Mary (family 10-a) from dam, a Plenitopotentiary mare by Plenitopotentiary by sire, Emilius family 28.
My Babu’s 3/4 brother Joy (GB) 1957 registered in South Africa as Joy II by Djebe (FR) also from family 1-W has 4×4 Swynford. Joy II is 3rd dam sire of Jet Master (SAF) – 2 time South African Champion and seven times Champion sire. He has a stunning similarity to Northern Dancer.

Northern Dancer – sire Nearctic has 5×5 Chaucer from Canterbury Pilgrim, 1 strain @Swynford from Canterbury Pilgrim, + Hampton. The dam Natalma has to her sire line Chaucer (Canterbury Pilgram, the sire of Selene. Mahmoud as above @ Americus Girl + Hampton line thru Bayardo + Swynford tail-male to Mahmoud
Between pedigree or studbook whilst genetically questionable; the scrutiny of earliest lines from Saltram and his son Whiskey, to their daughters remains clearly remarkable towards an influential phenotype character – its genotype expression.
Those curiosities by Haplotype may further genetic links. Having endeavoured some objective oddities duly Northern Dancer’s defined pheno, it further places a question to the family sources noted as distaff family 2D ‘if’ parallel to family 1-W.
In essence across a European bred Saltram ‘type’ influence and an American bred ‘type’ Saltram crossed ultimately back in by i) 1)Nearctic 2) Native Dancer 3) Mahmoud where thereafter merged with #BT-Chouberski descendants where evolved to Northern Dancer/Lyphard from Goofed & possibley Halo because….??
Elope 1919 by Whisk Broom from Fly by Night & Danger Ahead 1946 by Head Play indicates error displacement.

Indeed – TB Saltram – the tough-nugget that reproduced himself unbeatable.
