3yo gelding: Cosmic Speed (Querari – Cosmic Dream (Saf) ex- Silvano (Ger).

The pedigree places 5×4 Lyphard + 4×5 Surumu where a continuing impact of these two sires can easily be described as dominant.

Working deep to these above lines revolves their genetic re-appearance with formidable bloodlines as described below,

Painstaking, intelligent, sometimes intuitive choice of a maternal grandsire can lead to the creation of celebrated nicks, where the blending of two sire names leads to the production of a new, superior brand of racing animal.

Ross du Bourg (Primacy of the Genes)

As “nuts and bolts,” pedigree the lineages have extensive influences yet for a certain prominence in the ‘few’ emerge as exceptional.

One must be on a constant watch for emergent genetic affinities.

The principle requires what may exert tremendous influential trait, through the contemporary pedigree, to a well-considered pre-potency quality.

Here, we discuss

🐴Court Martial by Fair Trial (Fairway)

TBL did not know the Court Martial pedigree template was beforehand evident. There was a chestnut stallion by the name of Way In (GB) by Fairway and he was exported to Italy. He produced a good quality steeplechaser by the name of Galatian (GB) and a Italian mare Feiro De Rio. Feiro De Rio was a G1 Oaks winner and produced Feria, a champion 3yo filly in Italy – she produced the US bred Gyr & Berkut (both by Sea Bird). Berkut produced Alydars Best, a G1 winner at 2 years. Gyr produced a G1 winning French bred son, Bon Sang (Fr).

Fair Trial – a high class English sprinter-miler who could carry his speed to 10 furlongs. He was a burnished chestnut with a prominent white blaze and three white socks.

Fair Trial – ranks as the most influential all-purpose sire line to make their mark. The Fair Trial line produced outstanding sprinters and milers, in addition to many winners of Derbies, Oak, St Legers, Quineas, weight-forage, 2mile handicaps and ever the Melbourne, Caulfield and Doombden Cups.

Fair Trial was an imposing individual, combining quality and strength who turned a foot out, a trait often discernible in his descendants. He got a consistent stream of good racehorses, whose salient quality was speed, and passed on his beautiful temperament to nearly all of his stock. – John Hislop

The Fair Trial earliest influences are ‘built’ to Cosmic Speed distaff @ 9×8, following on thru his son Court Martial 3rd dam sire of Elliodor (FR) – 2x Goofed – son Petition, 2nd dam sire of Danzig.

Fair Trial son Fairthorne (IRE) was a tremendous influence to the South African studbook as leading sire six times. The male line continued with F.T grandson Damask the 5th dam sire of Cosmic Speed.

(n.b. the classic-speed traits – what serve world calibre distinction are immersed in lines (ie Lyphard’s Court Martial/Goofed/Chouberski) came coeval. The 1951 French bred Court Martial son Affreux who served successfully in Australia, had produced the middle distance freak racing machine Winfreux. Winfreux was a holder of three Australian time records for the old imperial distance through 8 1/2 furlongs 9 furlongs and 11 furlongs and winner of 21 black-type races. Somewhat alike...Winfreux’s sire Affreux by Court Martial – to Chouberski male line in Hotweed (FR) 3rd dam sire at distaff. Hotweed’s siring son Pearlweed was exported to Argentina.

Surumu (Ger)

Leading sire in Germany 1984. A German Derby winner defeating the runner -up by 4 lengths. Ken Mclean (Designing Speed in the Racehorse) points to Surumu’s 3rd dam’s in-breeding to Sierra and Sainfoin (from Sanda) then further to Papyrus. Fair Trial takes 5×5 Sanda through Sainfoin and Sundridge.

Influences @Hyperion thru Owen Tudor ➡️➡️➡️male-descendant , Spanish Air (GB) whom stood in South Africa. Distaff 4th dam, Have Faith 4×5 Owen Tudor. OT ➡️Blushing Groom to the 5x Owen Tudor to multiples 8x Selene, dam of Hyperion.

Refinement is Subtle6×6 Herbager sire of Big Spruce (USA) & daughter Ballade (USA) dam of Devil’s Bag, champion 2yo colt. Herbager is 4x5x5 to Phalaris and the b/m sire Sainfoin affinity is apparent. What needs to be pointed out is that Herbager is a male line to Bosworth (from dam Selene) further to male-line Bay Ronald (as noticeably, Surumu).

Surumu x Court Martial 3x male crosses are ‘in’ typology to Bay Ronald.

Here, was a potential stallion from a different sire line that might just suit North American bloodlines. Ken McLean on ‘Bull’ Hancock’s calculated risk to purchase Herbager.
