Until that has been done, it cannot be realized how intimate it has been and with what far reaching influence throughout both domains of sport. That the Standardbred was founded by the English Thoroughbred Messenger is generally known. But it is not understood that throughout the development of both types, the connection between them has been constant and pervasive.

A John Hervey article writes of a magnificent world champion trotter, a gray gelding by the name of Greyhound 1932, bred by Henry Knight during the Depression. Henry Knight thought highly of his yearling (Greyhound) and ensured at the very least he would go into good hands as prices went poor. Chautauqua (f.f. 8-k) ancestral distaff has quite ‘rarity’ in Harkaway, the Irish Eclipse. Early English breeders loved incestuous breeding. More to the point however close in-breeding wasn’t a big deal. The method as such, came with climaxing important critical strains. Back in the day – a setting of their speed blood.

Of Chautauqua’s female ancestor, Campania (Aus) 1891 f.f. 8-k her Marpessa line (Pocahontas’s dam) @ Maribynong (Aus) by Fisherman. Working with strains like 15x Orville > King Fergus from Creeping Polly, Blaze, Portmores Whitenose (sister to Blaze), Hip, Cripple (Gimcrack’s sire) from Godolphin Blossom. Fisherman inclines to a New Zealand bred family @ Kilting 1927.

Another ‘gray flash’ that draws something spectacular, unusual and special is Gunsynd – 54 Starts, 29 wins. He endearingly played the crowd like no other.

Unbeknown to early Australian breeding, the diligence for speed endurance was already displaying of those 2-types built for speed. His sire Sunset Hue (Aus) from distaff through to Americus daughter Lady Americus, commonly f.f.9-c, as is Fair Trial b/m grand-sire of Gunsynd. And further ancestral Gunsynd distaff – observe (f.f. 6c) Fancy (GB) 1780 a full sister to Diomed by Florizel.

The study of Diomed & Fancy pedigree by Florizel is a fascinating one for his broodmare sire Cygnet from dam Godolphin Blossom is also dam of Cripple being Gimcrack’s sire. Miss Belvoir (GB) 1761 through daughters Sister Three to Steady & Sister One to Steady substantiates how comprehensive speed-endurance traits emerged.
